The abstracts are from "The Monitor: and Impartial Observer" (1802) which continued as the "Monitor" (1802 and 1805-09).
If you want not just a snapshot, but a panorama of life in the early 1800s, this is a book for you! While these abstracts are primarily those clips with interest to genealogical researchers, there is quite a view of overall life in that time.
This newspaper was based in Washington, GA; however, the various articles and legal notices were from many surrounding counties, i.e.: Baldwin, Clarke, Columbia, Elbert, Franklin, Greene, Hancock, Jackson, Jefferson, Lincoln, Oglethorpe, Warren, Wilkinson, & others.
The book has a very nice hard cover, and is on acid-free paper, 8 1/2 x 11", 353 + xii pages. It appears to be very well made.
It has a Table of Contents and is fully indexed. An index of personal names, a slave - master index and a subject place index are all included. It also contains a list of abbreviations and symbols used in the book.
Items such as letters left at the post office, court actions, important lost or mislaid items, legal notices, sheriff's sales, some death notices, stolen slaves, and public sales are among the items fund in the first 6 pages. A listing of 45 plus persons who won in the land lottery is shown on pages 18-10. A longer list is on following pages. Election results are listed when found.
Items of interest from other parts of the country include an account of the death of Merierther Lewis in a dispatch from Nashville, Tennessee.
I found it difficult to write this review as I kept finding things that should be included here, but I do not think that the author would appreciate me including the entire book.

Printer Lady, a current publication, is the story of Sarah Hillhouse, the first woman editor of a newspaper, "The Monitor", which she published in Washington, Georgia in the early 1800's. In those days, it was unheard of for a woman to work outside the home, but Sarah, who had learned well all facets of the printing business while her husband was still living, felt that she had no choice but to continue with the work after his death. She was now the sole head of the household. With the help of her children, this courageous woman not only kept the newspaper going, but also printed the proceedings of the Georgia state legislature as well.
In Printer Lady, Frances Traxler Greiff also touches upon various other topics of interest of the time such as the land lottery and slavery.
The book is well-written, very interesting and a delight for any student of Georgia history, young or old. Reviewed by Marie T. DiPaola
