Descendants of Samuel and Rachel (Brown) Jones of Lincoln County, Tennessee The following should be taken as a very rough draft of information compiled by Jane W. Waller (JWW) and put into a genealogy program by her son George Waller (GW). Much of this information was sent by JWW to GW on a floppy disk dated 6 May 1989. Any dates in the 1990's refer to the date of entry into the genealogy program. I will be cleaning up the data as time permits so that this file will be of more use. Meanwhile... enjoy! His habits through life did not run into excesses, which may account, to some extent, perhaps, for his great lease of life. He was of a cheerful, playful disposition and passed his life without jarring or worry. There is no doubt that he really attained the great age named. He moved to this county sixty-eight years ago and settled on the farm where he died. Indians were camped around him. He "Fayetteville (TN) Observer" August 8, 1872 "Remarkable Longevity " Samuel Jones and Rachel Brown, natives of North Carolina, were married in Georgia in 1802, removed to Lincoln county, Tennessee, in 1808, with three children and settled on Coldwater creek on the south side of Elk river ten miles below Fayetteville, and about one half mile from where they now reside, and have resided ever since coming to this county. "They have had fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters, of whom two sons and five daughters are now living. "Samuel Jones is now 96 years old. They have lived together as man and wife 70 years. The old man frequently walks to Camargo, three miles from his home and back." (8 Aug 1872 Fay. Observer) Copy of loose papers in LCT archives includes some info on administration of Samuel Jones estate and the sale of his personal property after 21 Apr 1877. (sent from JWW to GW, postmarked 14 Dec 1995) "As I remember being told, our earliest relative came to Lincoln County Tenn. around 1800. From where he came I never heard. Definitely, but supposedly from North or South Carolina or Georgia. The old letter (a copy is enclosed) may show connections in E. Tennessee or W. North Carolina. I presume Blountsville, where the letter was posted, is in one of the above states. The above is in reference to Samuel Jones. The next in line would be S.B. Jones (Pap is what our Grandfather William Carroll Jones called him.)". JWW:From the above obituaries the birthdates can be determined: Samuel Jones was born March 11, 1777. Rachel Brown Jones was born February 23, 1787. Both the 1850 and 1860 census of Lincoln county confirm Samuel's statement to the Observer reporter, that he was a native of North Carolina. Several descendants of Samuel and Rachel said it was a family tradition that Samuel Jones came to America from Skilton, Ireland, settling first in North Carolina, migrating to Eastern Georgia, then to Lincoln county. Mrs. Minnie Byers, descendant of Samuel through a son William, gave the following information: "Samuel Jones came from Skileton, Ireland, to North Carolina, then moved to Georgia where he married Rachel Brown, of whose people we know nothing." Mr. John W. Good of Moultrie, Georgia, a grandson of Samuel Jones, through William, and a brother to Mrs. Byers, in a letter written May 25, 1957 stated: "Originally, as I have always understood, the Jones family came as immigrants to America from Skilton, Ireland. They first came to North Carolina. Where they stopped there, or how long they remained I do not know. From there they migrated to some place or places in Georgia." Of their arrival in Lincoln county there can be little doubt of the family legends handed down. I have talked or written to three descendants of this Samuel, all descended from different children of Samuel and the outline varies but slightly. Mr. Good wrote, "From this state (Georgia), they migrated, at least early in the last century to Lincoln county, Tennessee. On this journey from Georgia to Tennessee, as it was told me, the mother of the family swam the Tennessee river - at what point I do not know - on horseback with the baby in her arms - quite heroic. She later lived in the 'upstairs' of a log-pen house 'to keep the wolves off' while the men returned in wagons to Georgia for their remaining household goods left in that state." This story is the same that I heard as a child from my father, H. Blakely Warren, a great, great, grandson of Samuel Jones. He was a son of Julia Ann Drennan Warren, daughter of Mary Eliza Yeager Drennan. Mary Eliza was the daughter of Sarah Jones, the baby in the mother's arms of the "heroic river crossing." Samuel Jones settled back of Camargo in the hilly headwaters of Coldwater creek and in 1964 some of his descendants were still living there. In the obituary it is stated in 1877 that the kitchen he built was still there, and in a letter from Mrs. Byers in 1957 she wrote, "Where the family of ten childreen were reared, an old kitchen where the family ate stood on the grounds for sixty years." Lincoln county, Tennessee Land Survey Entry Bk. 3 p. 4 Plat 6 Samuel Jones 218 acres and 107 poles by virtue of Entry No. 4010 on the headwaters of Coldwater creek, southern branch of Elk river. Again to quote from the obituary, "His habits through life did not run into excesses, which may account to some extent, perhaps, for his great lease of life. He was of a cheerful, playful disposition...." Long before I became interested in family history, I had been told the stories of this "playful fellow." By word of mouth it has been passed down for over one hundred years that he would take a candle and taunt his timid wife, saying that he would catch his hair on fire, just to have her plead for him to stop. Once he came too close and his hair was singed. I wonder, too, how playful and cheerful Rachel thought it was when he became so angry that he would break every dish in the house, so that she could not serve a meal until he took a "feed basket" to Camargo and buy more dishes. In August of 1964, I went to the "old cedars in front of the old John Moore home, which is above the high bluff near the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Manse there at Yukon" where Mr. Good said that Samuel and Rachel Jones are buried. The graves are unmarked, but it is still known by those in the neighborhood that the first Jones are buried there. The location was so peaceful and lovely that if my great, great, great, grandfather, Samuel Jones did indeed "pass his life without jarring or worry," his final resting place could not be more perfect. LCT Bibles 6:85. "Samuel B. Jones' father had a deed that John Quincy Adams signed. Samuel B. Jones father's name was also Samuel. Samuel B. Jones was carried in his mother's arms as she rode on a mare led by her husband Samuel Jones from Georgia to Lincoln Co., Tenn. They settled on Coldwater Creek. Samuel built a wigwam out of cane & they lived in this until he went back to Georgia & brought back material to build a house. The Indians helped him to build his first house." as told by B.C. Albright. Samuel Jones was known for his temper: he often teased his wife by holding a candle to his red hair pretending to burn it. One day he came too close. Once he broke every dish in the house and had to walk to the nearest store to buy more. Ora S. Warren speaks of Samuel Jones: "I don't think gr.daddy Jones was bad-his vices, liquor & temper-many have more than that-he has many outstanding gr-&gr.grsons etc." RACHEL BROWN was born on 23 Feb 1787 in NC.
