Hi, Fellow VA Oliver researchers-

As I have mentioned, I am researching (to a point) the Halifax Co., VA Olivers
in hopes of finding a connection with my Charlotte County Olivers. There were
(at least) two Oliver families in Halifax County. William and James Oliver,
sons of James d. 1787 Amelia County were there as well as their sisters
Elizabeth Forrest and sarah Bottoms, at least for a time. Others of this
generation were in Mecklenburg and Nottoway Counties.

The other Oliver line was from Caroline, desc's of John Oliver Jr of King Wm
Co. Some believe that James of Amelia was his son also. Those of this line
came from Caroline and include Alva, Nicholson (Nickerson; Nicholas), and for
a while Douglas. This family apparently moved back and forth over the state
line into Person Co., NC. They were also found in Caswell Co., NC.

Dee Smith is desc'd from Biven (Bevin; Bivin) Minor Oliver, b. Halifax Co. ca
1803 (I don't have the notes handy). Since Isaac Oliver, d 1799 Notoway Co
(son of James of Amelia) named a Gideon Minor in his will, I immediately
suspected him to be of this line. However, among his children were a Nicholas
and Alva; he also lived between Halifax and Person Counties, so is certainly a
son of one of the Caroline Olivers.  Any help here? However, at this time Dee
is the only one on this list (to my knowledge) desc'd from the Caroline line.

Sally Wyman ( Gentar@aol.com ) is desc'd from Sally Oliver, m. Watkins Hobson
in Halifax Co. in 1809. This was a daughter of William Oliver (son of James
Sr); I understand that she has a question about dates that must be resolved,
however, before this can be said for certain.

I got the will books (microfilm fron LDS) that would have had William Oliver's
will. However, he apparently died intestate. His inventory, etc was there but
no great genealogical data. In these books he gave guardian acct's for the
children of Thomas A. Oliver (children unnamed). Thomas A. Oliver was involved
in a lawsuit (debt) with Thomas Oliver of Charlotte County. I ordered the
order books covering that period to obtain the names of Thomas A. Oliver's
children (he m. Betsy Moore in 1808). In book 32, p 546, Oct 1816, Nathaniel
barksdale and William Oliver made oath to administrate the estate of Thos A.
Oliver, dec'd, Thomas Moon and John J. Oliver their securities. This was very
near the end of book 32.

Now for the Oliver luck - there was no book 33 on the microfilm! This would
contain the appointment of guardian(s). In book 35, p 279, August 1819 there
is a suit: Harrison Oliver, Thomas Oliver, and Reuben Oliver by their guardian
William Oliver vs Mary Oliver and Nancy Oliver infants by their guardian
Francis Moon, In Chancery....  Can we assume that the girls were daughters of
Thomas A. Oliver, with a different guardian? When William died, an accounting
was made of his guardianship. Perhaps they will be mentioned in the order
books then, but I don't have them at present.

Most of you have received a copy of the book by Benjamin F. Oliver, which
traces some desc's of (mainly) William Oliver. When his children were named,
there were two blanks. Could these have been Thomas A. and John J. Oliver? I
do not have the children of James, except that he had the son Benjamin named
in James Sr's will.

I have earlier microfil on order, covering ca 1800-1815. Perhaps this will
turn up more data on these Olivers.

Joseph OLIVER and wife Ann arrived in Charlotte Co., VA in 1779 from King
William Co. He died testate in 1786 in Charlotte Co., and she died testate in
1795. Children:
1. Dau. Mary   m. Thomas OLIVER (related?) probably before moving to
Charlotte Co. They had children Nancy m. Edmund Fitz PATRICK in Charlotte Co.
1794; Sarah m. Anthony JOHNS Char. Co. 1799; Thomas Jr. m. Ann OLIVER dau. of
John (I haven't identified this John) 1810; Joseph b. ca 1782 m. -?-; and
John who may not have married. Mary and Thomas d. in Charlotte Co. after
1830.
2. John arrived in Augusta Co. (later Bath) about 1778-9. There he m. Agatha
FROGG, and died 1799 intestate and with no issue. He held several positions
in government, and was involved with the development of Warm Springs.
3. Edward Vaughan OLIVER did not marry, and died testate in 1795, Char. Co.
4. Joseph Jr. m. Catherine GRIGG in 1787. They left five sons orphaned in
1800: James, Joseph, John, Whiting, and Samuel (my ancestor). In 1804 they
were taken to Athens, GA with grandmother Mary Rakestraw and uncle James
Hayes; all moved to Conecuh Co., AL ca 1820.
5. William (b. ca 1767) m. Lucy Johnson in 1791, and moved to bath Co. ca
1796 where he died after 1830. Children: Joseph, John, James, Nancy, Sally,
Polly, Betsy, and Lucinda.
I, Ward H. Oliver of Baton Rouge,  would like to hear from descendants or
others who may have knowledge of this family. I have not been able to trace
them back past 1779, but suspect on weak evidence that they originally
immigrated to Gloucester Co., and were related to the family of James OLIVER
(d Amelia Co, 1787) in Amelia and Halifax Co's.
