We could find absolutely no record of him in Carter co. leading us to conclude that he msut have stayed here a short ime and moved away, probably further west with the westward flow of migration in 1810. For these reasons, the discovery of Mary OLIVER PERRY and husband, James PERRY, in Lincoln co., TN in 1830 gave us new hope of locating William OLIVER. Mary's identification of a brother, William OLIVER, whose son, Henry OLIVER, married her daughter, Manerva PERRY in Lincoln co., TN in 1834 was almost too good to be grue. Then to find census records here of not only William, but living next door, a John OLIVER, aged 45 and over, in 1820 was a major breakthrough. Thomas DELANY in the 24th regiment of TN Militia commanded first by Col. LOWRY, and subsequently commanded by Col. Leroy HAMMONS; in the war with great Brian declared by the U.S. on the 18 day of June 1812, that her said husband was drafted at the town of Fayetteville in co. of Lincoln, state of TN on the 20th of Sept. 1814 for the term of 6 months, and continued in actual Service in said war for the term of 6 months and 23 days, and was honorably discharged at Big Spring in the co. of Madison, St. of AL on the 11th of Apr. 1815. She further declares that she was married to the sd. William OLIVER in the co. of Lincoln, st. of TN on or about the 28th day of Feb. 1812 by one John FRAME an acting JP, and that her name before her said marriage was Nancy PAINTER, that her said husband died in Lincoln co., TN on or about Jan. 2, 1841, and that she is now a widow. She further declares that there is no tangible family record of her said marriage, that by her order the office of the Clerk of the Co. Court of the aforesd co. has been diligently searched, and that the marriage license nor copy nor no record of her said marriage can be found. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which she may be entitled under the "act approved march the 3d 1855. Wit: S.F. SPENCER Nancy "X" OLIVER We James B. ESLICK and Martin L. CASEY, residents of the co. of Lincoln. TN, upon our oaths, declare that the foregoing declaration was signed and acknowledged by Nancy OLIVER in our presence, and that we believe from the appearance and statements of the applicant that she is the identical person she represents herself to be. AFFADAVIT OF Amos MORRIS Mar. 22, 1856...Amos MORRIS, a resident of Lincoln co., TN declares that he served as Orderly sergeant at the same time, and with William OLIVER in the Company commanded by Capt. Thomas DELANY in the 24th reg't of TN Miltia in the war with Great Britain in 1812...He further declares that he has been personally acquainted with the said William OLIVER up to the time of his death and that he has been acquainted with the said Nancy OLIVER up to the present time-that said William OLIVER and said Nancy OLIVER were known and reputed in the neighborhood where they lived as husband and wife- that he has never heard a rumor to the contrary. AFFADAVIT OF JOHN LACKEY 22 mAR. 1856...John LACKEY of Lincoln co., TN ...he was personally acquainted with William OLIVER before his death that the said Nancy OLIVER was known in the neighborhood where they lived as the wife of said William OLIVER- that he saw the said William OLIVER DIED, nd that the deportment of the aforesaid Nancy OLIVER on that occasion was such as to indicate the disoution of man wife by death. He further declares that he was acquained with several of the children of the said Willaim and nancy OLIVER-that they were known by the name of OLIVER and as the children of the aforesaid Nancy OLIVER. AFFADAVIT OF JOHN WISEMAN ....26 Mar. 1856 ...John WISEMAN, a resident of Lincoln co., TN declares that he was acquainted with William OLIVER and Nancy PAINTER before they were married-that he was invited to be present at their wedding, but was not present-that they were married with in the distance of one half mile of his residence-that he saw them the day following their said marriage and that John FRAME a JP told him the said John WISEMAN that he married them. He further declares that he was acquainted with the said William OLIVER and Nancy OLIVER up to the time of the death of William-and Nancy OLIVER to the present time "From this record we learn that Nancy PAINTER was his second wife. Two girls born between 1804-1810 were born before his marriage to Nancy. This second marriage places William OLIVER in Lincoln co., TN by 1812, suggesting he came from Rockingham co., NC in 1808/10 to Carter co., TN, where he remained only a short time. This also indicates that his father, John OLIVER, Sr. did not come to Lincoln co., with William, but later after the other children were grown or after 1815, when he signed the marriage bond for daughter, Mary OLIVER and James PERRY.
