Note: This Company was first organized as a detachment in the field at North Branch, Md., Sept. 7, 1864, from the Veterans and Recruit, A. and H., 6th W.Va. Cavalry pursuant to Special Order #139, Headquarters Department of West Virginia July 29, 1864. On the 16th day of September, 1864, the Battalion 6th W.Va. Vet. Vol. Cavalry moved to New Creek, W.Va. where this Co. received a detachment of Recruits and its organization was completed. They remained at New Creek, W.Va., scouting and skirmishing with the forces under General Rosser and Captain McNeil, the guerilla. On the 27th day of November 1864, this Co. took part in an engagement near Moorefield, W.Va., where it lost 2 men killed and one wounded.

On the 28th day of November 1864, the garrison of New Creek, W.Va., of which this Co. formed a part was surprised and captured. (The Co. records were destroyed thereby rendering the Co. history incomplete.) Those who escaped capture were sent to Remount Camp, Pleasant Valley, Md., Jan. 10, 1865, where they remained until April 4, 1865. Moved thence to Opequan Crossing, Va., performed duty at that place, scouting in pursuit of the Guerilla Mosby until April 15, 1865. Moved thence to Remount Camp, Md., where the exchanged prisoners returned and the Co. was fully mounted and equipped. Marched thence to Berryville, Va., April 17, 1865, where it was assigned to duty in 2nd Cavalry Division under command of General Chapman. Moved thence via Washington, D.C. to Falls Church, Va., April 23, 1865. Returned to Washington, D.C., April 25, 1865, marched to Surratsville, Md., April 26, 1865, in search of the assassin of President Lincoln. Was engaged in scouting around Surratsville, Bryantown, and Port Tobacco, Md.

Returned to Washington, April 28, 1865, where the Co. was placed on Provost Duty. It performed part of the guard on the day of the Grand Review and a portion of the escort of the court which tried the assassins. This Co. was relieved at Washington, June 4, 1865, and reported to the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Division on the discontinuance of the Cavalry Corps. The division was broken and the Co. returned to Long Bridge, District of Columbia, June 8, where it remained until June 12, 1865. Moved thence to St. Louis, Mo. On the night of the 20th of June, 1865, the train on which this Co. was transported collided with a train bound east near Carlisle, Ill. where it lost 27 horses.

Moved from St. Louis, Mo., June 23, 1865; arrived at Ft. Levanworth, Kan., July 15, 1865, and arrived at Julesburg, Col., Aug. 25, 1865. A portion of the Co. moved thence to Alkali, N.M. and performed escort duty on the Overland Stage Line. That portion participated in an engagement with a party of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at Rocky Point on the 29th of October, 1865, and also on the 9th of November 1865, at Alkali, N.M. Another portion of the Co. was sent to Denver, Central and Empire Cities as escorts for goods for the Ute Indians. This Co. moved from Julesburg, Col., on the 22nd September 1865, and reached Fort Laramie, Dak., Sept. 26, 1865. Moved thence Platte Bridge, October 13, 1865, and reached Platte Bridge, Dak., Oct. 31, 1865. Assisted in the erection of Fort Caspar and remained at that post until April 3, 1866, when it was ordered to Fort Levanworth, Kan., for muster out. Reached Fort Levanworth, Kan., May 15, 1866.

This Co. has served in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, Nebraska, Colorado and Dakota and marched a distance of 5600 miles.
