Note: This Company was originally organized at Cumberland, Md. on the 15th day of October 1864. Marched thence to New Creek, W.Va. Served as part of the garrison of that post. Scouting in the Moorefield Valley and skirmishing with the enemy that infested that country until Nov. 28, 1864, known as guerillas, when the enemy under General Rosser surprised and captured that garrison of New Creek, W.Va. in which affair two men were wounded, all the records of the Co. were lost excepting one muster roll. Those who escaped marched thence to Remount Camp, Md. where the company was remounted and fully equipped. Marched thence to Berryville, Va. Served in the Shenandoah Valley until April 21, 1865. Marched thence to Washington, D.C., participated in the search after J. Wilks Booth, assassin of President Lincoln. Served as Provost Guard in Washington, D.C. until June 12, 1865. Embarked on cars for St. Louis, Mo. June 12, 1865. Train collided with eastern bound train on night of 18th inst near Carlisle Station, Ill. This Co. sustained no losses save in horses and ordnance. Arrived at St. Louis, Mo. on the 21st Inst. Embarked thence on a steamer for Ft. Levanworth, Kan., arriving on the 29th inst. Marched thence to Ft. Sedgewick, Col., arriving on the 25th of August 1865. Performed escort duty for Overland Stage Line; participated in three several engagements with the Indians. Served on the plains until April 10, 1866, when ordered to Ft. Levanworth for muster out; arriving on the 7th day of May 1866. Total distance marched since organization 4960 miles. | |||||
