Grace EDDY was born on Dec 25, 1899 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents were Francis and Annie Grace Eddy was born on Dec 25, 1899 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents were Francis and Annie ASH EDDY who were natives of West Virginia. Annie's occupation was a nurse. Frank Eddy's occupation according to a Oct 9, 1896 entry is laborer-upholster by trade.
According to the record Annie's residence was unknown after 1916. In a 1896 record on Ruth EDDY they make a reference that Annie EDDY lived on Front Street and Broadway. Listed as a religious preference in the record is a P. They may have been Protestant.
Grace's siblings were Ruth, Elizabeth, Isaac, Alena, Charles and John.
On June 5, 1912 Elizabeth, Grace and Isaac were admitted to THE CHILDREN'S HOME. In Grace's surrender record it mentions that Grace's mother had many hardships and showed minimal interest until of late. It then mentions court but little more than that. It does appear that juvenile court had some interaction and involvement in the decision to place Grace. A dictation dated on that same day makes a reference that Grace's father, Francis, was dead and gives no residence or status on Grace's mother - Annie ASH.
On July 13, 1926 (I think the year is a typo I believe it would have been 1906 not 1926) Alena EDDY was admitted into The Children's Home. She is a sibling of Grace. The cause of Alena's admission states - homeless. She was brought by Miss Tehan of Juvenile Court. A January 3, 1907 dictation states that the children were permanently committed to Bethany Home at Glendale. It further states that the history of this case is missing from the files of Juvenile Court.
Grace was placed in July of 1912 by H.D. Clarke in the Emerling home in Ohio City, OH. It was four miles east and the Emerlings had a farm with 85 acres. There was a Protestant Church close by and school was one mile away from their farm. It mad reference that they may adopt. This information was found in our archives of our "Surrender Books".
Children who were adopted through THE CHILDREN'S HOME are referenced in one of the surrender books depending on the year of the surrender. Grace was only at The Children's Home for about a month.
On March 21, 1913 a "cheerful letter" was written by Grace and received by The Children's Home and Mrs. Emerling added that Grace was doing fine. On Dec 26, 1913 a dictation states that Grace had a good report card for the 4th and 5th grade. On July 21, 1914 an entry states that Mr. Emerling died three weeks ago. September 4, 1916 dictation states that Grace is doing well and has a "good house". She finished the 6th grade and is in good health. On Dec 10, 1916 the worker received a "nice letter" from Grace who is well and happy". She is now in the 7th grade and attends S.S. On February 3, 1917 Grace sent a letter for her sister who is in Bethany House and the worker forwared it to her. The record does not give a name of the sister but is most likely Ruth due to the next entry.
On August 14, 1918 Grace's sister Ruth writes to Grace and tells Grace about her husband who earns $175.00 per month before going to war. Ruth was unhappy because the worker could not tell her where Grace was. Grace once wrote that she preferred not to have them know her address at that time. On April 19, 1921 the worker received word that Grace's health was good and that she was married on Dec 22, 1920 to Howard S. Miller. A reference was made to Ohio City, Ohio but it is not clear if that is where the wedding took place or where Miller was from.
Reference to Isaac Eddy was also found in the same record volume as Grace Eddy. Isaac was born in 1903. He was in THE CHILDRENS HOME for boys. On Jan 3, 1907 he was permanently committed by Juvenile Court to Bethany Home in Glendale. On Nov 23, 1912 Isaac was brought by a Sister Irene from Bethany Home to place. It appears that he was placed adoptively by H.D. Clarke in West Virginia.
On Oct 6, 1913 there is a dictation that states that Isaac has a good report card. It further states that Isaac was a "very good boy and good at farm duties". On Dec 30, 1913 Isaac writes of a nice Christimas and states that he is in the 5th grade. On Sept 28, 1916 Isaac was visited by a worker who reported that Isaac was in perfect health, well satisfied, fine boy. The foster parents are fond of him and it is a "splendid home".
On Jan 15, 1920 Isaac was visited again and was in high school at Jane Lew. The dictation stated that Isaac was "full of energy, learns quickly, but does not like school".
Ruth Eddy was born on February 25, 1895 in Cincinnati. The cause for her admission was poverty. She was brought to THE CHILDRENS HOME by her mother, Annie Eddy. The record indicates there her husband had been sick and in the hospital. That same day Ruth was taken by her mother. It appears, as mentioned that Ruth later lived at the Bethany Home and was permanently committed to live there in 1907. Under Paternal Relatives for Ruth it lists Charles and John Eddy and Bellaire, Ohio. It is unclear if Bellaire is where they lived it simply has the city written under their name. This information was taken from Grace's surrender records. It indicates Ruth and Grace did keep in touch via THE CHILDRENS HOME. We have no other information on this family in our records.
