     John Alltop Jr., a son of John Alltop, married Esther Jones in 1809, in Harrison county.  Apparently John died before 1850, since Esther Alltop appears as a head of a family in the 1850 Gilmer County VA census.  Esther is listed in the household of her son in law, Alpheus Ford, in the 1870 Gilmer County WV census.

4.LEWIS ALPHIUS ALLTOP     2.JOHN ALLTOP JR.     1.JOHN ALLTOP

 

     Lewis Alphius Alltop, a son of John Jr. and Esther (Jones)

Alltop, was born about 1826. He married Sarah Ann Norman.  Sarah,

a daughter of Felix and Elizabeth Norman was born April 23, 1831

and died March 2, 1916.  Lewis and Sarah lived on Spruce run near

the mouth of Kelly run, then on Dry run. Colonel William L.

"Mudwall" Jackson enlisted Lewis in the Confederate Army on March

20, 1863.  Lewis was captured by the Union Army, at Harpers

Ferry, WV, on July 15, 1864, while serving as a First Lieutenant

in Company A, 19th Virginia Cavalry.  He was sent to Washington,

D.C. on July 20, 1864 and confined in the Old Capitol Prison,

then transferred to Fort Deleware where he died May 7 or 8, 1865

of chronic diarrhea.  He was buried on the Jersey shore.  After

Lewis's death Sarah Ann married William Powell.  She and William

are buried in unmarked graves near the center of the Powell

cemetery  on Dry run.

5.BENJAMIN ALLTOP     2.JOHN ALLTOP JR.     1.JOHN ALLTOP

 

    Benjamin Alltop, a son of John Jr. and Esther (Jones) Alltop, was

born in VA May 30, 1830 and died July 1, 1917.  He married Roanna

Norman. Roanna, a daughter of Isaac and Susan (Jackson) Norman, was

born August 25 1833 and died Aug 27, 1906.  They are buried in the

Cedarville cemetery. Benjamin Alltop was considered to be an expert

marksman and gunsmith in his day.  He and Roanna lived for a time in

the Leading Creek area, where their oldest daughter, Sarah, found a

husband, and another daughter, Susan, was drowned in a quick sand bed.

    In 1875 he purchased 58 1/2 acres on Linn Camp fork of Peach Tree,

Steer Run, from Cain and Leveny  Kerns. Benjamin and Roanna lived

there until they died. Clavel James, a lifelong resident of Peach

Tree, remembers the hearse, pulled by two stately black horses, coming

for "Uncle Ben".

     Maria Alltop, a daughter of John Jr. and Esther (Jones) Alltop, was born about 1832. She married Alpheus Ford in VA (WV) before 1858. Alpheus was born in Harrison County VA about 1816. He married Eva ----. Eva was born in VA about 1816 and died in Gilmer County VA (WV) about 1855.

     Evan Alltop, a son of John Jr. and Esther (Jones) Alltop, was

born in VA about 1839.  He married Sarah Amanda Robertson.  Sarah was

born in VA about 1851.  The family is reported in the 1870 and 1880

Doddridge County WV census. Sometime prior to 1904, Sarah died and

Evan remarried and moved to Gilmer County WV.  He is listed in the

1910 Gilmer county census with Bina, born in VA in 1878.

     Mary Elizabeth Alltop, a daughter of Benjamin and Roanna

(Norman) Alltop, was born December 25, 1854 and died December 21,

1938.  She married Benjamin Virgil Vanhorn July 12, 1877.  Benjamin was

born in 1858 and died April 17, 1881. Mary married Henry "Bobby"

Conrad February 16, 1886.  They separated after a few years of

marriage and Mary married Benjamin Franklin Perkins.  They separated

after some years.

married Minter Dennison.  Minter, a son of John and Martha Dennison,

was born about 1857 and died about 1883.  Julia married William Lewis

Beckett about 1884.  William, a son of Samuel and Lucinda (Eddy)

Beckett, was born June 18, 1861.

     R. Leman Alltop, a son of Benjamin and Roanna (Norman) Alltop, was born December 3, 1875.  He first married Allie Bell.  His second wife was a widow Price, who lived at Millstone, WV. According to "Descendants of George Mollohan, by Harry James Mollohan, Leman married Hattie Pearl Mollohan in Pomeroy, OH June 15, 1928. Hattie, a daughter of William Anderson "Dick" and Myrtle (Postalwait) Mollohan, was born October 26, 1910.

    Mollohan reports that Leman died in Wood County WV October 31, 1971.

He also reports Leman's date of birth as December 3, 1897.

was born in Gilmer County WV July 2, 1914 and died January 22, 1987.

He married Mary Hazel Reed in Oakland, MD April 5. 1935.  Hazel was a

daughter of Scott and Ruth M. Reed.

    Harlen was ordained a Baptist minister October 16, 1960.  He set

up the Grafton, OH Baptist church in 1961.

WV in 1912 and died there August 13, 1999.
