NOTE: Two men named Humphey Arnold have lived in central
WV and both
have left descendats. They may be related, but there is
no proof at this
writing. Both reportedly married a Harriet Ann Smith.
This is probably
an error.

Humphrey
Arnold was born about 1732. He married
Harriet Ann
Smith. Harriet was
born about 1734. "The History of
West
Virginia" states that the Arnold family left Chester
County PA
about 1765, with the parents and Isaac going to Harrison
County
VA and sons Jonathan, Andrew and Jesse going to Greene
County PA.
The family was enumerated in the 1840 census of Lewis
County VA
(WV).

Jonathan
Arnold, a son of Humphrey and Harriet Ann (Smith)
Arnold, was born in Chester County PA in 1752. He married
Rachael Scott.
About 1765, the family moved to Fayette County
PA. Jonathan
obtained a land warrant in Fayette County July 28,
1785 and the tract was suryveyed December 24, 1785.
Jonathan's will
is dated July 25, 1786 in "Luzere Township,
Fayette County in the State of Pennsylvania." and is
found in
Fayette County Wills Book 1, pages 145 and 146. The will was
probated June 24, 1799.

William
Arnold, a son of Jonathan and Rachael (Scott)
Arnold, was born in 1773 and died in Gilmer County Va
(WV)
October 4, 1856.
He married Hulda Ursula Knotts.
Hulda was a
daughter of Absolom Sr. and Sarah (Blackshire)
Knotts. The
couple sold sthe ancestral property in Fayette county PA
to
Bernard Daniels
December 5, 1835. They apparently
moved to
Greene County PA and on a farm near Brownsville. They appear in
the 1850 Gilmer County VA (WV) census in the home of
their son
William.

Jonathan
Arnold, a son of William and Hulda Ursula (Knotts)
Arnold, was born in Greene County PA March 27, 1802 and
died in
Randolph County WV July 20, 1883. He moved from Greene
County to
Beverly, Randolph County VA (WV) in 1822. He first married
Thursa Butcher, who died about a year after their marriage. He
married Phoebe Ann Collett in 1841. Phoebe died after a few
months. In 1844,
Jonathan married Laura Ann Jackson.
Laura was
a daughter of Jonathan and Julia (Neil) Jackson of
Harrison
County VA (WV).

Thomas Jackson
Arnold, a son of Jonathan and Laura Ann
(Jackson) Arnold, was born in Randolph County VA (WV)
November 3,
1845. When Thomas
was 13, he was placed in school at Lexington,
Va and made his home with his uncle, Major Thomas
Jonathan
Jackson, who is better known as "Stonewall"
Jackson. He
graduated from Washington and Lee University and began
the
practice of law in Randolph County in 1868. On June 1,
1876,
Thomas married Eugenia Hill, a daughter of Confederate
General
Daniel H. Hill.
