1.JOHN ASHLEY

 

     John Ashley was born in North Carolina in 1774.  On March 8, 1799, at Wadesboro, Anson County, NC, he married Mary Alford, who was born in Monroe County, Virginia in 1773.  They brought their family to what is now Big Sandy Creek in Roane County, WV and built a log cabin in 1810. John acquired a tract of land on the Elk River in what is now Clay County, WV and built a low head dam to divert water for a grist mill about 1825.  John operated this mill for about nine years before selling out to Samuel A. Samples II and moving back to Big Sandy Creek. John's name is listed "John Wiley Ashley" in at least one record.  Dawson's "Twistabout and Thereabout" says that a W. Ashley bought 400 acres of land across the Elk River from the land owned by John Ashley.  This land was bought by Samuel A. Samples II at about the same time he bought the John Ashley property.

2.RICHARD ASHLEY     1.JOHN ASHLEY

 

     Richard "Buck" Ashley, a son of John and Mary (Alford) Ashley, was born in Surrey County NC about 1802 and died in present day Caly County WV before 1860. He came to Kanawha County VA with his parents about 1810. He married Mary Elizabeth Young in Kanawha County August 14, 1816.  Mary, a daughter of John and Keziah (Tackett) Young, was born in Kanawha County about 1796.

      Sarah Ashley, a daughter of John and Mary (Alford) Ashley, was born in 1801 and died in Roane County WV in 1886. She married William Hammack.  William, a son of Martin Hammack, was born in 1784 and died in 1876.

      Elizabeth Almira Ashley, a daughter of John and Mary (Alford) Ashley, was born in 1809 and died in Roane County WV in 1894. She married Matthew Geary in 1835. Matthew was born in Down County, Ireland May 10, 1790 and died in Roane County WV January 24, 1865.

    Eveline Ashley, a daughter of John and Mary (Alford) Ashley, was

born about 1825 and died in 1878.  She married Andrew "Doc" Samples.

Doc, a son of Samuel Alexander Samples II and Jane (Samples) Samples,

was born in 1826, died in 1905.

     After Eveline's death in 1878, Andrew married a widow, Rebecka

King.

    Leroy Lewis Ashley, a son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Young) Ashley,

was born in 1820.  He married Caroline Geary.  They divorced and he

married Nancy Perry.  Nancy, a daughter of Abraham and Isabelle

(Williamson) Perry, was born in VA about 1842.

      Lewis is listed as “Lewis” in the 1870 Nicholas County VA census and as Leroy in the 1880 Nicholas County Census.

Mullins May 25, 1865. Lewis, a son of Joseph and Minervia (Williams) Mullins, was born in Kanawha County VA (WV) and died in Clay County WV in 1925.    Lewis served the Union in the Civil War in Co M 4th W.Va. Cavalry.

    Samuel Houston "Buck" Ashley, a son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Young) Ashley, was born December 27, 1856 and died October 4, 1933.  He married Nancy Wilson January 3, 1878.  Nancy, a daughter of Charles W. and Margaret (Spencer) Wilson, was born January 25, 1858 and died November 20, 1930.

       Samuel H. “Buck” Ashley, a son Children of Leroy Lewis and Caroline (Geary) Ashley, was born in Nicholas County VA in March 1855. He married Nancy ----. Nancy was born in VA in January 1857.

      They are listed in the 1900 Clay County WV census. They had been married 22 years. Nancy was the mother of 9 children, with 8 living.
