1.JOHN DOBBINS

John Dobbins was born in Scotland in 1747. It is not known when he came to America, but he enlisted in the Continental Army and served in the Revolution in the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment under Captain James Taylor and General Anthony Wayne. After the war, John went to South western Pennsylvania, where he married Elizabeth Keener in 1784. Elizabeth, a daughter of Samuel Keener, was born in Woodstock, VA. The family moved to Patterson Creek, Hampshire County VA (WV) where their only child was born in 1786. They later moved to O'Brien's Fork

of Steer Creek in Braxton County VA (WV) where John died April 3, 1833.

Mary, a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy (McMilliam) Hamrick, was born in VA in 1786 and died in Braxton County in 1867. Samuel and Mary are listed in the 1860 Census of Braxton County VA (WV) as both being 73 years old.

Joel Dobbins, a son of Samuel and Mary (Hamrick) Dobbins, was born in VA about 1816. He married Sarah Dodrill. Sarah, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Gregory) Dodrill, was born in VA about 1822. Joel enlisted in Co. "G" 10th W.Va, Infantry May 3, 1862 by Captain Carr at Bulltown, WV and was mustered October 4, 1862 for three years. He died at the U.S. General Hospital at Grafton, WV January 25, 1864 of consumption. He was described as being 45 years old, dark complexion, blue eyes dark hair and 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was last

paid to include August 31, 1863. Sarah apparently died between 1861 and 1870, since their two youngest children are listed in the household of Jacob Riffle in the 1870 Braxton County WV census.
