DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM HACKER =========== == ======= ====== Don Norman 1.WILLIAM HACKER William Hacker was born in England about 1690 and died in Bush's Ford VA (present day Buckhannon, Upshur County WV) in 1775. He arrived at South Patowmack, VA (now Marlboro Point) as a transported convict aboard the "Forward" January 16, 1730/31. He was convicted at Old Bailey Sessions in April 1730 of stealing four cocks, seventeen hens, five drakes and five ducks belonging to Christopher Tilson. Like all transported felons, William was required to serve seven years to obtain his freedom. His sentence ended May 21, 1738 in Stafford County VA and he married Ann Dillon shortly afterward. Ann was transported about three years before William and was then known as Ann Turner. She probably married a Dillon before she married William. Children of William and Ann (Dillon) Hacker. 2. (1). John married Margaret Sleeth about 1765. Margaret, a daughter of John and Mary Ann (Wallace) Sleeth) was born in Ireland June 24, 1747 and died in Lewis May 8, 1832. John established a claim on Hackers Creek in present day Lewis County WV in 1768, raised a crop there in 1769 and moved his family there in the winter of 1760. John served ninety one days in Captain James Booths company of VA militia in 1777 and was discharged by Captain Booth July 13, 1777. In 1778, a John Hacker enlisted in George Rogers Clarks "Illinois Regiment" and was part of Clarks expedition against the Indians at Vincennes IN. This was another John Hacker. John signed a petition in Monongalia County VA November 12, 1782, a time when Clarks soldiers wre far to the West. In 1787, John and Margaret's daughter, Mary Ann (Hacker) West was killed by a band of Indians led by the Indian renegade Leonard Schoolcraft. John signed the petition for the establishment of Harrison County VA in 1789 and served as sheriff of the county in 1799. John Hacker's will: "In the name of God Amen. His estate was inventoried for the Lewis County court September 27, 1826. He married Mary Adah West in Harrison County VA February 12, 1791. Mary, a daughter of Edmond Sr. and Mary West, was born December 20, 1770. In A.S. Withers' "Chronicles of Border Warfare" William Hacker and others are alleged to have massacred the one hundred inhabitants of an Indian village at present day Bulltown, Braxton County WV in the summer of 1782 in retaliation for an Indian massacre of the Stroud family in June of 1782. Although these accounts have been accepted as fact for many years, other authors doubt its truth. An anonymous writer of an article in "Awhile Ago Times", reprinted in "The Hacker's Creek Journal" states that Chief Bull and his Delawares were moved from Bulltown by the Indian Affairs Commissioner in May 1772 and references a number of documents proving that the Delawares moved south to the lower Mississippi, where Chief Bull died after 1810. Robert B. Smith states that in 1772, Captain Bull and his people moved to the White River in Indiana, about eighteen miles from present day Wabash. In 1778, after the capture of English General Hamilton, they removed to the Mississippi. Smith cites Simon Kenton's "Notes", Draper's "Manuscripts" and private documents is support of his statements. There is evidence that Withers' "Chronicles of Border Warfare" is a rewrite of documents compiled by William Hacker and William Powers and published shortly after 1825. Withers is alleged to have been hired by publisher Joseph Israel in 1831. to rewrite the "Chronicles" after the death of the original authors. Children of William and Mary Adah (West) Hacker. 19. About 1805, John and his older brother William disagreed over politics and John moved his family to Green County OH.
