1.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS

 

    Traditional family history states that Samuel Lewis Hays was an

out of wedlock son of Edward Jackson, who was married at the time of

Samuel's birth and that the influential Jackson family arranged the

marriage of Samuel's mother, Elizabeth McCullough, to John Hays.

Elizabeth and John were married August 17, 1794 and Samuel was born

October 20, 1794 in Harrison County.

    Samuel Lewis Hays was born in Harrison County October 30,  1794

and died at Sauk Rapids, MN March 17, 1871.  He married Roanna Arnold

in Harrison County June 15, 1817.  Roanna, a daughter of George and

Elizabeth Roanna (Prunty) Arnold, was born in Harrison County VA (WV)

August 25, 1798 and died in Lewis County Va (WV) June 12, 1841. After

Roanna's death Samuel married Nancy Covert October 13, 1842.  Nancy

was born in 1798 and died in 1863.  Samuel married a widow, Emma

(Hand) Fletcher, for his third wife.

    Samuel bought 100,000 acres of land in Western Virginia for $107

February 21, 1832.  He moved his family to Glenville, Gilmer County VA

(WV) in 1837 to live on his land.  He served in the US Congress in

1841-1843 and appointed Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson to the US

Military Academy.

    He was appointed Receiver of Public Money of the land office of

Minnesota and was performing that function when he died.

2.ELIZABETH HAYS    1.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS

 

   Elizabeth Hays, daughter of Samuel Lewis and Roanna (Arnold) Hays

born Januaary 9, 1818 in Harrison County, Va. She married John Webb in

Gilmer County Va. John Webb was the son of Benjamin and Martha (Stuart)

Webb of Ritchie County

3.PEREGRINE HAYS    1.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS

 

    Peregrine Hays, a son of Samuel and Roanna (Arnold) Hays, was

born in Harrison County VA (WV) October 7, 1819 and died in Gilmer

County WV January 6, 1905.  He married Louisa Ann Sexton May 10, 1849.

Louisa, a daughter of Augustus and Anna Sexton, was born in presend

day Upshur County WV about 1822.

    The couple moved to Arnoldsburg, in what is now Calhoun County

WV.  Peregrine served as a deput sheriff and was instrumental in

the formation of Calhoun County in 1858.

    Peregine was a member of the Moccasin Rangers, a Confederate

partisan group commanded by George Downs.  Peregrine and Capt. Downs

were captured at Big Bend, Calhoun County VA in 1862 and sent to Camp

Shase in Ohio.  They were paroled.

    Peregrine served in the WV legislature in 1877.

4.JOHN ELLIOT HAYS     1.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS

 

    John Elliot Hays, a son of Samuel and Roanna (Arnold) Hays,

was born in Harrison County VA (WV) April 15, 1821 and died in Clay

County WV January 28, 1892.  He married Henrietta Frances Lewis in

Wood County VA (WV) May 14, 1845.  Henrietta, a daughter of Willian

Linton and Eliza (Warth) Lewis, was born in Mason County VA (WV) April

12, 1827 and died in Gilmer County WV March 28, 1916.  John was an

attorney in Gilmer County.

10.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS JR.     1.SAMUEL LEWIS HAYS

 

    Samuel Lewis Hays Jr., a son of Samuel and Roanna (Arnold)

Hays, was born in Lewis County WV April 7, 1835 and died in Chehalis

County WA June 12, 1911.  He married Elizabeth jane Cather.

Elizabeth, a daughter of James and Malinda (Hustead) Cather, was born

in Harrison County Va (WV) February 9, 1838 and died in Chehalis

County WA May 30, 1909.

    George Warren Hays, a son of Peregrine and Louisa (Saxton)

Hays, was born in what is now Calhoun County Wv in 1850 and died

there in 1927.  He served the Confederacy in the Civil War in the

14th VA Cavalry.

    He graduated from the Butler Academy of Law.  He married Mary

Roessing. Mary was born in PA in March 1849 and died after 1900.

 His second wife was a widow ------ Wills.

    Napoleon French Hays, a son of Peregrine and Louisa (Saxton) Hays,

was born in Calhoun County Va (WV) July 29, 1858 and died in Gilmer

County WV November 2, 1921.  He married Mary E. Cain in Gilmer County WV July 22, 1882. Mary, a daughter of Harrison and Abigail (West) Cain, was born in Gilmer County VA (WV) in January 1858.

    Samuel Augustus Hays, a son of Peregrine and Louisa (Saxton) Hays,

was born in Calhoun County VA (WV) March 31, 1861.  He married Susan

Adelaide Ewing.  Susan died in 1891.

    William Linton Hays, a son of John Elliot and Henrietta Frances

(Lewis) Hays, was born in Gilmer County VA (wV) April 28, 1851 and

died in Logancounty CO November 28, 1941.  He married Jemima Bell

Harbert.  Jemima was a daughter of Lemuel and Sophia (Ash) Harbert.

    William went to CO in 1887 and married Johanna "Kate" Boehme there

in 1892.
