1.PETER MCCUNE

Peter McCune was born in November 1748 in Ireland and died January 15, 1832, in what is now Washington District, Calhoun County, WV and is buried outside the fence at the Knotts cemetery. We do not know when or how he came to America.

Peter enlisted in the Continental Army in 1777 under Captain John Lewis and Colonel Henias Morgan of the 2nd VA Regiment. (Service No.W 7412). In 1778, he reenlisted at Petersburg, VA, under Captain Campbell and Colonel Lewis Gibson of the 9th VA Regiment. In total, he served three years against the Indians and the British and was discharged at Wheeling, VA (WV) in 1781.

In late 1780, the Indians were on the warpath near the present site of Clarksburg, WV. The Adam O'Brien family had taken refuge at Fort Richards, about ten miles upstream from Clarksburg on the West Fork of the Monongalia River. Christina O'Brien met Peter McCune, who was a guard at the Fort, and they were married by a Baptist minister named Edwards January 13, 1781. Christina was 14 years of age and many years later, Elijah Runion was to give oath that he had witnessed the marriage of Peter McCune and that he had advised Christina to stuff handkerchiefs in her bosom to appear more mature. Christina

died in Calhoun County WV in March 1879.

In 1778, Peter received 400 acres of land on Rooting Creek, Monongalia County VA (WV) in compensation for his military service. In 1810, Peter built the first cabin in Dekalb District, Gilmer County VA (WV) at the mouth of Leading Creek. By 1815, he had moved to the West Fork of the Little Kanawha River.

Peter McCune appeared in court in Lewis County, VA (WV) September 13, 1820 to give oath of his service in the Revolution and to give a schedule of his holdings. (Applicants for a Revolutionary War pension were required to list their property.) The court certified that Peter had property worth $67. He was awarded a pension of $8 per month, to begin August 3, 1818. After Peter's death on January 15, 1832, Christina applied for his pension. Elijah Runion and Adam Flesher appeared to testify that they had been present at the wedding of Peter and Christina. Christina further stated that Peter had served six

months in the American Army during the War of 1812. She also stated that she and Peter were the parents of 10 children, six boys and four girls.

2.CATHERINE MCCUNE 1.PETER MCCUNE

Catherine McCune, a daughter of Peter and Christina (O'Brien)

McCune, was born about 1782 and died in 1851. She married Anthony

Parsons in Harrison County VA June 3, 1807. Anthony, a son of Charles

Parsons, was born about 1782. Anthony served in the War of 1812 in

the 5th Regiment of VA Militia under Captain Bogard and was discharged

at Fort Nelson, Norfolk VA February 22, 1815.

3.MARY MCCUNE 1.PETER MCCUNE

Mary McCune, a daughter of Peter and Christina (O'Brien) McCune,

was born about 1785 and died about 1833. She married George Bush in

Harrison County VA (WV) December 27, 1804. She married Thomas

Barnhouse in Lewis County (present day Calhoun County WV) August 7,

1823.

Hardesty's History of Calhoun County WV says:

"The first wedding was a double one, two taking place at the same

time and place, the high contracting parties being Thomas Barnhouse

and Mary Bush and Thomas Cottrell and Mary Parsons. The officiating

clergyman was the Rev. William Hacker."

Deweese states, "This Mary McCune was the mother of Sam McCune,

called Sam the Varmet, who was shot and killed in his yard by his

uncle Timothy McCune... ...at the commencement of the late Civil

War."

Mary died before 1834 and Thomas married Drusilla Burnside.

Peter McCune Jr., a son of Peter and Christina (O'Brien) McCune, was born on the south branch of the Potomac River in VA July 1, 1796 and died in Calhoun County VA August 18, 1867. He married Margaret Bush in Harrison County VA (WV) October 10, 1815. Margaret, a daughter of Adam and Margaret (Hagle) Bush, was born December 24, 1799 and died after 1880. According to Barr Wilson's "Bush Family History", Peter and Margaret came to the West Fork of the Little

Kanawha River in what is now Calhoun County WV in 1815, while Hardesty's "History of Calhoun County" dates their arrival as 1831.

6.TIMOTHY MCCUNE 1.PETER MCCUNE

Timothy McCune, a son of Peter and Christina (O'Brien) McCune, was born in Va about 1797 and died about January 1861. He married Anna Canbury Helmick in Kanawha County VA January 28, 1839. Anna, a daughter of Abraham and Fair Sabra (Connolly) Helmick, was born about 1823.

They apparently separated about 1859. Anna is listed as "Anna B. Helmick" in the 1860 Calhoun County VA census. The widow Anna Helmick married Daniel Sharp in Calhoun County May 2, 1861.

8.DANIEL MCCUNE 1.PETER MCCUNE

Daniel McCune, a son of Peter and Christina O'Brien McCune, was born about 1798 and died in 1849 or 1850. He married Rebecca Nichols. Rebecca, a daughter of Levan and Margaret (Mace) Nichols, was born in VA about 1805. According to D.S. Deweese's "Recollections and Experiences of a Lifetime", Daniel was a member of an informal group who called themselves "The Hellfired Band". This group roved from place to place and wanted to preserve the West Fork of the Little Kanawha River as a sportsman's paradise. Since Jonathan Nichols was a

supervisor charged with building a road through the West Fork area, his objectives ran counter to the purposes of the Band. Accordingly, they killed Jonathan April 8, 1843.

A citizen's posse arrested Jackson Cottrell, Daniel McCune, Joseph Parsons and Alexander Turner and took them to Charleston, where they were convicted and sentenced to eighteen years in prison in Richmond, VA. Jackson was pardoned after five years, but the others died in prison. Daniel died about 1849 or 1850. After Daniel's death, Rebecca married Jacob McElwain.

was born March 31, 1803 and died August 15, 1885. She married John

Wright in Mason County VA (WV) November 21, 1821. John, a son of Basil

and Nancy (Jones) [Miller] Wright, was born February 28, 1803 and died

in Roane County WV in May 1865.

10.CHRISTINA MCCUNE 1.PETER MCCUNE

Christina McCune, a daughter of Peter and Christina (O'Brien)

McCune, was born about 1804, probably in Harrison County VA (WV) and

moved with her family to what is now Calhoun County WV. She married

Barnabas Cook about 1820.

Barnabas, a son of Saul and Elizabeth (Snow) Cook, was born April

15, 1784, in at Litchfield, Kinnebec Maine and died in 1862 at Amma,

Roane County, WV. His monument at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Roane

County WV lists him as a veteran of the War of 1812.

Barnabas came from Ohio to what is now Calhoun County as a

Disciples of Christ missionary. He was a pioneer of Kanawha county,

where he served as justice of the peace and one term as High Sheriff.

He also managed to spend much time preaching the Christian gospel over

a period of twenty-five years. The marriage records of Kanawha are

strewn with his name and reports of marriages that he performed.

According to Hardesty's History of Calhoun County, Barnabas was

one of the very early settlers on the West Fork of the Little Kanawha

River in what is now Calhoun County, WV. Daniel DeWeese recorded the

following in his (1905) book, "Recollections and Experiences of a

Lifetime":

"Squire Cook, in company with a comrade, Elijah McCumber, came as

missionaries to the then wilderness of the West Fork, and Cook was the

first minister of the gospel to preach a sermon within the present

limits of Washington district, Calhoun County. Squire Barnibus Cook

married Christena McCune, a daughter of Peter McCune, before referred

to, while I was at Squire Cook's who then lived just above the road

opposite where what is now known as the Dock Parsons place, just South

of the Lee district line. In the fall of 1841, I was at Squire Cook's

when one of the settlers in the Squire's bailiwick, Daniel Coger, who

had sold his wife sometime previous to Timothy McCune for an

averagible deer's skin, dressed to be as large as a doe's hide, in

delinquency of which payment, Coger sought a redress of grievance in

Squire Cook's court, it being the first law suit that I ever attended,

both litigants and witnesses being present and the cause coming on for

hearing, the court heard all that was adduced by plaintiffs and

defendants and the material facts being overwhelmingly in favor of the

plaintiff, judgement was accordingly awarded for the deer hide and

the costs upon which Wm. Truman, constable, was armed with an

execution and commanded by the court to proceed accordingly."

Barnabas died in 1863 and Christina in 1879.

Samuel McCune, a son of Patrick McCune, was born in VA about

1813. His Wife's name is unknown and in the 1850 census, he is listed

as a head of a household of five children and a 45 year old

housekeeper, Elizabeth Butler. The ages of his children suggest that

his wife died between 1847 and 1850.

Samuel married Sabra McCune in Calhoun County September 6, 1860.

Sabra, a daughter of Timothy and Anna Canbury (Helmick) McCune, was

born in Kanawha County VA about 1840.

In the 1860 Calhoun County VA (WV) census, Samuel is listed as 47

years of age and with wife Sabra and one child. The older children who

were listed in the 1850 Gilmer County census are listed with Elizabeth

Butler in a separate household.

Rollo was born about 1815 and died in Santa Clara, CA February 13, 1881. The family operated a store at Reedy, Roane County VA (WV) in 1848 and went to California about 1850.

Solomon McCune, a son of Daniel and Rebecca (Nichols) McCune, was

born in what is now Calhoun County, WV about 1835. Solomon served the

Union in the Civil War in Co.B 9th W.Va. Infantry and was wounded at

Cedar Creek. In an 1883 Pensioners Roll for Calhoun County WV, Solomon

is listed as having a pension of $8.00 per month by reason of an inury

to the abdomen. He was granted this pension in December 1867 on

certificate number 135,113.

He married a widow, Bethany (Helmick) Tanner, in Calhoun County VA

(WV) April 6, 1861. Bethany, a daughter of Abraham and Fair Sabra

(Connolly) Helmick, was born about 1829 and died about 1863. She had

married Samuel Tanner August 18, 1842.

Solomon married Rachel Mace in Kanawha County WV April 14, 1864.

Infantry during the Civil War and received at least one wound. He married Mary Jane Reed in Calhoun County WV September 28, 1866. Mary, a daughter of Levi James I and Jane (Conley) Reed. Mary was born in 1854 and died in Calhoun County about 1881.

William married Mary Elizabeth Ellison in Calhoun County February 1, 1883. Mary, a daughter of Mattison T. and Nancy Ellison, was born in Calhoun County in October 1861.

1957. Morton, a son of Morton H. Miller was born in Long Island, NY July

21, 1925 and died in Summit County August 6, 1997.

Children of Morton and Virginia Juanita (McCune) Miller.
