1.THOMAS PRITCHARD

Thomas Pritchard was probably born in England about 1590. He

arrived in Jamestown VA in 1620 aboard the ship "Abigail' as a member

of the Virginia Company. He returned to England and again came to

Jamestown aboard the "Abigail' in 1624.

In 1657, "Thomas Pritchett and wife" received head rights from

Gervase Dodson. Other deeds bearing their names are dated March 5,

1661 and December 28, 1668.

Thomas served as a member of the House of Burgess from Gloucester

County VA in 1656.

Thomas Pritchard, a son of Thomas Pritchard, was born in VA and

died in Westmoreland County VA before November 1670. An inventory of

Thomas' possessions was given into court in Westmoreland County November

9, 1670, by John Brooks, who married Thomas' widow.

Christopher Pritchard, a son of Thomas Pritchard, was born in

Westmoreland County VA prior to 1670 and died in King George County VA

between June 2, and August 7, 1730. He married Jane Muse. Jane was a

daughter of John Muse.

At a Court for Westmoreland County held May 31, 1692, several

persons are sworn in as grand inquisitors for the body of the county for

the present year: Christopher Pritchard, John Qusenbury, et al.

Christopher verifies his relationship to Thomas by the following

deed July 6, 1695: "Know all men by these present that I, Christopher

Pritchett, son and heir of Thomas Pritchett of the County of

Westmoreland, have and do hereby alein, bargain, sell, enfieoff, and

confirm all my right title and interest of the within patent unto

Humphrey Queseinbury of the County aforesaid..."

Christopher's will is dated June 2, 1730.

Christopher Pritchard, a son of Thomas and Mary Pritchard, was

born July 1, 1718. He married Sarah Gollothan. Sarah was a daughter of

Martin Gollothan. Christopher appeared in the records of Fairfax and

Prince William counties spelled Pritchardt, Prichard, Pritchard and

Pritchett.

His aunts, Mary Sanford and Lydia Pore sold land to Christopher

May 3, 1754.

William Christopher Pritchard, a son of Christopher and Sarah

(Gollothan) Pritchard, was born about 1745 in Prince William County VA

and died June 18, 1777 in a skirmish in the American Revolution in

Maryland. He married Amelia Knotts.

Christopher enlisted as a private in Captain Alexander Lawson

Smith's Company, commanded by Colonel Daniel Morgan, of the 11th VA

Militia July 23, 1776. He was killed in Maryland June 18, 1777.

Amelia (Knotts) Pritchard may have died in childbirth or shortly after,

since she is not found in either VA or MD records after the birth of

their son.

John Pritchard, a son of Thomas and Rachel (Davis) Pritchard was

born July 29, 1760 in Leesburg, Loudoun County VA and died March 28,

1847 in Decatur County IN. He married Anna Smarr October 12, 1795 in

Loudon County. Anna, a daughter of John and Pearl Smarr, was born in

Loudoun County and died December 15, 1841 in Decatur County, IN.

In March 1781, he volunteered as a Private in Douglas Company, Col.

Mathews Regiment of the VA militia. He was wounded in the leg in the

Battle of Guilford Court House and was in the siege of Yorktown. After

Yorktown, he was transferred to Capt. Win. Beams Company under Col.

Alexander and was discharged in Sept. 1782. He was living in Scott

County, KY in 1826 and Decatur County Indiana in 1833.

He was awarded a pension on a certificate issued Feb. 14. 1834.

Answers to questions at Pension hearing: "I have the record of my age in

the family Bible now in the possession of my brother in Virginia. I was

residing at the Gum Springs in Loudoun County VA when I was called into

service and continued to reside there until the war was over. Since the

Revolution, I resided in Maryland. From there I removed to near

Morgantown VA. From there to Kentucky and there I resided until about

six years since when I removed to Decatur County, Indiana where I now

reside."

Sarah Pritchard, a daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Davis) Pritchard,

was born about 1762 in Loudon County VA. She married John Smarr about

1788. John, a son of Andrew and Elishe Smaw, was born in Cameron Parish,

Loudoun County VA and died before June 08, 1795 in Loudoun County.

Sarah married Cornelius Skinner Jr. August 17, 1799 in Loudoun

County. A son of Cornelius Skinner, he was born about 1766 in Loudoun

County and died there about 1814. Cornelius Skinners estate was

appraised by Order of the Court April 12, 1814 and gives Sarah Skinner

as his administratrix - Loudoun County Will Book L, p. 10.

John Smarr's will names sixteen children as well as Thomas, the

seventeenth, who was born not long before Johns death. Names of children

appearing in his will who received one shilling sterling: son Peril: son

Andrew; son George, daughter Elizabeth, daughter Ann; son Charles; son

Samuel; son Ruben. To daughter Mary Hampton, he gave 21 pounds ten

shillings to be equally divided among her children. To daughter Jane

Weadon, 21 pounds ten shilling to be equally divided among her children.

To daughter Chloe More twenty pounds ten shillings; to daughter Nancy

Williamson eight pounds ten shillings to be divided among her children

after her death; to son John Smarr 20 shillings; to daughter Sarah

Tilman 20 shillings: to daughter Fanny 32 pounds for maintenance of

schooling until she marries or reaches the age of 2l. The remainder of

estate to "my beloved wife Sarah Smarr and the under named children

begotton of my body vix. Robert, Mary Hampton. Cloe, Nancy and Fanny."

Robert and Sarah were sole Executors. June 9, 1794.

The sale of his goods recorded in Will Book F. p. 24 lists ten Negro

slaves: Minnie, Lott. Torn, Joseph, Abraham, Ben, Jonas, Rose, Will and

Ellen. The family Bible and Testaments were bought by John Pritchard,

who married Ann Smarr.

Eleanor Pritchard, a daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Davis)

Pritchard, was born about 1764 in Loudoun County VA and died before

April 1825 in Marion County VA (WV). She married Richard Price about

1804. He was born February 17, 1757 in Fairfax County VA and died July

22, 1834 in Marion County VA (WV).

Richard Price served the Colonies in the American Revolution. His

pension is No. 12067. According to service records and his pension, he

enlisted at Leesburg, VA and served from January 1777 for one year as a

private under Captain Payton Harrison and Colonel Spottswood. In 1780.

he spend two months under Captain Francis Russell, and in May 1781, he

served under Captain Cleveland and Colonel Matthews. In 1781, he guarded

prisoners from General Cornwallis' captured Army. During his service, he

was engaged in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and the skirmish

at Bacon's branch.

In 1794, he moved to Monongalia County, VA. Earlier, he had married

his first wife, Nancy Dallas, said to be of the same line as George M.

Dallas, Vice-President under James Polk. She died in 1800. It is

generally assumed that Nancy Dallas was the mother of the four oldest

children and Eleanor Pritchard was mother of the two youngest.

Richard married the third time in Monongalia County. His new wife,

Elizabeth Arnett, was the daughter of Andrew Amett. William Price, son

of Richard, was the administrator of his estate. The inventory and

appraisement was made in September 1834 and the final settlement

recorded on October 18, 1839.

Thomas Pritchard, a son of Thomas and Rachel (Davis) Pritchard,

was born Loudon County VA January 9, 1768 and died in Harrison County

VA (WV) December 24, 1846. He married Nancy Tichenal January 2, 1796

in Allegheny County MD. Nancy, a daughter of Moses and Margaret

(Jackson) Tichenal, was born in Morris County NJ before 1780. The

couple moved to Monongalia County VA (WV), where Nancy died about 1812.

Thomas married Mary Moody in Monongalia County Va (WV) October 24,

1812. Mary, a daughter of Robert Moody, was born in PA about 1785 and

died after 1850 in Ritchie County VA. The family moved to the South

Fork of the Hughes River in Harrison County VA (WV) in 1832.

Elizabeth Pritchard, a daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Davis)

Pritchard, was born in Loudon County VA about 1775 and died in Marion

County VA (WV) after 1849. She married John Smith January 09, 1798 in

Allegany County MD. John, a son of John Smith, died about 1801.

Elizabeth married George Furbee about 1802 in Allegany County. George, a

son of Caleb and Sarah (Bowers) Furbee, was born about 1777 in Delaware,

and died May 10, 1849 in Marion County VA.

At the January Court term of 1850, Elizabeth Furbee, Jeremiah

Beatty, her attorney and son-in-law, and William Snodgrass appeared to

straighten out some of the legal problems. When examined by the court,

Beatty gave the following evidence: "I wrote this will as the old man

lay dying. Furbee was the second husband of Elizabeth Furbee, who had

children by her first husband, whose name was Smith, Thomas Smith,

Pritchard Smith, and Margaret Millan are children of Elizabeth Furbee by

her first husband. At the time that I wrote the first will. Elizabeth

Furbee urged the old man very hard to give her children by her first

husband a part of his property. Some time before I wrote the last

paper...I was informed by Alpheus Millan, the son of Margaret Millan,

that Mr. Furbee intended to see me and he thought it likely Mr. Furbee

wanted to make some alterations in his will. I then went up to see him

and was told by (a neighbor) that it was not the old gentleman who

wanted alterations made in the will, but it was the old lady, his wife,

who desired the(m). I then went on up to Mr. Furbee to see if he wanted

any alterations made and he said no."

George Furbee entered the Continental army and served in the Battle

of Brandywine and other engagements. After the close of the Revolution,

he went to the Northwest Territory and settled on what was to become the

site of Columbus, Ohio. He remained there until the early 1800s when he

went to Monongalia County VA, cleared a large farm near the Monongahela

River, and formed one of the pioneer settlements of northwestern

Virginia.

Nancy Anne Pritchard, a daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Davis)

Pritchard, was born about 1780 and died in Monongalia County VA between

1850 and 1860. She married Davis Meredith in Monongalia County VA

November 19, 1800. Davis, a son of Job and Rebecca Lydia (Davis)

Meredith, was born about 1750 in Kent County DE, and died in Monongalia

County VA in 1825. His will was dated May 24, 1825 and was probated in

the August term of Monongalia County Court at Morgantown, VA.

War Department Records show that Davis Meredith served in the Second

Corps, Delaware Regiment under Colonel Henry Neill in the American

Revolution. Davis married Amelia ------. Davis and Amelia were living in

Kent County DE when they signed a deed with his father Job.

Davis was enumerated in the 1790 Federal census in Fayette County PA. He

had probably married Elizabeth ---- by that time. He witnessed the will

of Joshua Deweese in Fayette County December 04, 1791. Davis then

appeared on January 4, 1792 to declare that he had witnessed the will

which was being offered for probate.

By 1796. Davis was living in Monongalia County. Virginia and serving

on the Fall term of the Grand Jury. He bought 400 acres on Stacks Run on

September 22, 1796 from John and Ann Evans and William and Ruth

Pettyjohn for 150 pounds which he and his wife Elizabeth sold for 175

pounds to James Smallwood Wilson on February 13, 1798.

Ann Pritchard Meredith was also called Ann Nancy or Nancy Ann. Davis

and Ann lived on a 150 acre tract near Robinson's Run on Paw Paw which

he bought from Fleming and Christina Jones on July 08. 1801.

was b about 1782, and died before 1850 in Marion County VA. She married

Charles Roberts March 4, 1799. She married a widower, John Parker,

December 22, 1804 in Westernport, Allegany MD. John was born about 1770

and died in December 1840 in Monongalia County VA. His first wife was

Elizabeth Neptune.

William Pritchard, a son of William Christopher and Amelia (Knotts)

Pritchard, was born December 17, 1777 in Loudon County VA and died in

April 1866 in Marion County WV. He married Hannah Meredith February 18,

1805 in Monongalia County VA. Hannah, a daughter of Davis and Amelia

Meredith, was born about 1785 and died about 1827 in Monongalia County

VA.

William's father, William Christopher Pritchard, died in the

American Revolution and his mother, Amelia (Knotts) Pritchard apparently

died when he was quite young and he was brought up in the household of

his uncle, Thomas Pritchard Sr. and Rachel Davis Pritchard, and later

was the administrator of Thomas Pritchard Sr.'s estate in Maryland.

Hannah Meredith and William Pritchard were married by the Reverend

John W. Patterson on February 21, 1805 in Monongalia County. They lived

in Allegany County MD until about 1815 before settling in the area known

today as Paw Paw District, Marion County, WV.

born August 19. 1800 in Allegany County MD and died January 19, 1882 in

Decatur County IN. She married John Gray. He was born December 11, 1759

and died in 1836. John was a Revolutionary War Veteran who enlisted in

his home state of Virginia and served under his older brother, Captain

David Gray. He fought at Yorktown, and for the service he rendered there

was granted a pension and 200 acres of land in Virginia. His original

headstone bears this epitaph:

'Remember friends as you pass by

As you are now, so once was I

As I am now so you must be

Prepare for death and follow me."

Nancy married James Walters. James was a son of William and

Elizabeth Walters.
