Schöndorf is considered one of the most beautiful “chessboard plan” Danube Swabian villages. The construction of “Schöndorf” is based on the town plan from Vienna drawn by Ludwig Reisel. The original 1 sq. km. plan of 200 houses has 25 blocks of 8 houses each with four streets North/South and four East/West with the the town and church square in the center..

Construction began in the spring of 1766 and 162 homes had been built by the year 1767 for the 202 German colonist families already living in the village. Crowded conditions often led to disputes and the spread of disease.
On a map from the year 1770 only the North/South streets are developed and the village square is still without a church.
It has been told that the “Naming Bishop” Franz Anton Engl, of Wagrain (1750 - 1777) upon his visit to the town, was to have proclaimed “What a beautiful village!" Legend also has Emperor Josef II making the same exclamation when seeing the town on his inspection tour of the Banat in 1768.
