Isaac Patterson, Westside, Crawford County, Iowa, was one of the early settlers of the eastern part of the county. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sept. 5, 1837. Thomas M. Patterson, his father, was descended from a long line of American Pioneers and soldiers. Thomas participated in the War of 1812 and his father was a soldier in the Revolutionary struggle. Isaac's mother was Margaret nee Large.

In 1851, when Isaac was in his teens, his parents moved to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa, and he grew up to manhood on a frontier farm. He was early taught honesty, industry, and perseverance. He attended school in the primitive log schoolhouses, but the greater part of his education was obtained in the school of experience.

When the Civil War came on, young Patterson was one of the first to enlist in the service of his country. In August, 1862, he became a member of Co. D, 12th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, and served 3 years. He was in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, in the siege of Vicksburg, and guarded Corpus Christi Pass, while a portion of the division went up Red River. Mr. Patterson was honorably discharged at Mobile, Alabama, and was paid off and mustered out at Clinton, Iowa.

With the war over, Mr. Patterson returned to Scott County and again engaged in farming. He lived there until the spring of 1868, when he bought the property in Crawford County, then wild land. He became he owner of 920 acres of Iowa soil. He had a two-story frame house, located on a natural building site and surrounded with lawn, groves, and orchard.

Mr. Patterson was married at Davenport, Iowa, in 1869, to Sarah Shetler, a native of Allegheny County, Pa., and a daughter of Jacob and Elisa Shetler. They had two children: Josephine and S. L. (a son). Isaac Patterson was a member of the G.A.R.

J. T. Payne, Justice of the Peace of Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, was born in Clay County, Indiana, in 1851. He was the son of William Benjamin and Malinda (Sturdevant) Payne ~ the former a native of Maryland and the latter of North Carolina. When a young man, the father moved to Clay County, Indiana. A farm was purchased in Boone County, Iowa and in 1883 opened a farm in Ida County. William and Malinda had 7 children: Candacy of Hayes Township; J. T. Payne (the subject of this biography); M. L. Payne, a contractor of Sioux City; Julia Ann, wife of W. M. Pilcher, of Hayes Township; B. F. Payne; George H., a bridge inspector on the Denver & Ft. Worth railroad at Henrietta, Texas; and Laura, wife of Charles Lovett of Blaine Township, Ida County, Iowa.

J. T. Payne was reared and educated in Boone County, Iowa. He purchased 160 acres of prairie land in Section 20, Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa on May 18, 1875. Two years later he erected a small house and began farming his land. In 1890, he built his frame residence, and a fine barn. He had a grove and orchard of 10 acres. He engaged in general farming and stock raising and added 80 more acres of land.

He served three years as a member of the County Board of Supervisors, was the first Assessor of Hayes Township ~ serving 4 years, was Secretary of the School Board 5 years, Township Clerk 2 years, and started as Justice of the Peace in 1888. He assisted in organizing and naming Hayes Township in 1878, since Hayes Township was taken from Corwin Township. He assisted in organizing the school districts and was Secretary of the Board during the erection of 6 school buildings. The lumber for the first building was hauled from Denison, Iowa.

Mr. Payne was married in Hayes Township on February 29, 1880 to Miss Georgiana Friott, a native of Vermont and reared in Massachusetts to the age of 9 years. Then they moved to Chicago, where Georgiana lived 5 years, and then in 1878, came to Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa. J. T. and Georgiana had 5 children: Ruby, Rodney, Armour, Luva, and Cornelius.

Mr. Payne and William Pilcher were the original settlers of Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa.

Andrew Preston was a proprietor of "Bonnie Brae" stock farm and a dealer in shorthorn cattle. He was born near Dundee in Forfarshire, Scotland, May 8, 1850. His parents were John and Matilda Preston of Scotland. When Andrew was nine years old, he came to America and located in Chicago, Illinois. Then he went to Dundee, Kane County, Illinois and attended school one winter.

In 1872, he came to Ida County, Iowa and moved on wild land there. In his eight-acre grove, he planted one acre of walnuts, one acre of maples, one acre of evergreens, hedges, windbreaks, etc. He planted fruit trees. He had a cottage home, two barns, and other farm buildings.

When Andrew was 24 years of age, he married Elvira M. Smith in Ida County. She was born in New York, daughter of Samuel Smith. Elvira died in 1879 leaving one son, Ellson G. Preston. In November 1882, he married Anna J. Ferguson. She was born in Chicago and was a daughter of D. C. Ferguson. Andrew had four children with his second marriage, namely: Archibald C., Howard H., Matilda E., and Winifred H.

For four years, Andrew served as secretary of the Ida County Agricultural Society. He had been a United States Crop Reporter for the county. He served as Township Trustee, as Assessor and secretary of the school board for Maple Township.
