Vandalia; born in Indiana Jan. 26, 1833; came to this county in 1867; owns forty acres of land, valued at $35 per acre.  His wife, Sarah Margaret BUCKINGHAM, was born in Ohio in 1835; were married Aug. 14, 1856; had five children—Virginia Iowa, Charles Thomas, M. Buckingham, Henry Wallace, Hester Margaret. Mrs. ENGLISH died Feb. 22, 1872.

DUNTLEY; she was born in Bellows Falls, Vt., Jan. 5, 1849.  Mr. FEATHERS came from New York to Knox Co., Ill., where he lived three tears; thence to Jasper CO., where he has resided since; followed the butcher, lightning rod and restaurant business.

GEARY, W. T.; Dr.; Physician and surgeon; Prairie City; was born in Centre Co., Penn., May 31, 1843; came to this county March 4, 1862.  Married F. N. McKEAN; she was born Dec. 21, 1854.  The Doctor commenced studying medicine with Dr. M. THORNELL; attended lectures at the University of Michigan; from there went to the Philadelphia University, where he received his diploma; also studied dentestry[sic].  When he came to this town there were only eight buildings in it; has grown up with the county; has a fine residence and one of the finest yards in the city; plenty of small fruit and flowers; came here with only $2.35 in his pocket and a saddle and bridle to battle against the hardships of a new country, and by close application to business has made himself a good home and comfortable circumstances.

GRIFFIS, Harvey J.; firm of McKEEVER & SUMMERVILL, Druggists; Prairie City; was born in Lewis CO., Ky., May 3, 1829; has 480 acres of land, valued at $20,000; been a member of the M. E. Church for twenty-four years.  Married Eliza A. MOORE, who was born in Huron Co., Ohio, March 18, 1832; mother of thirteen children, four of whom are living—John, Douglas, Frank, Joseph.  Emigrated with his parents to Clay Co., Indiana, in 1839; lived there 11 years; thence to Lee Co., Iowa in 1850; was there at the big deluge of 1851; lived there two years; thence to Jasper Co., where he has resided since; moved into a house with his father six miles west of Monroe.  At the time of coming here, this county was one vast prairie, plenty of Indians of 200 and 300 in a band; deer and wolves were numerous.  When he came to the county, was a poor man, had only $2.50, a team and wagon, to battle against the hardships of a new country; had to go to Oskaloosa for his milling forty miles; there was one small store in Monroe where he did his trading; could not buy groceries or dry goods with grain; has hauled wheat to Ottumwa, sixty miles, and sold it for 40 cents per bushel; came here when the country was new, and knows what a pioneer’s life is; by industry and economy has accumulated a fine property and pleasant home, and is one of the sound men of the county.

HAMMOND, S. J.; Farmer; Sec. 2; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Dearborn Co., Ind., March 31, 1828; came to this county in the Fall of 1856; has 160 acres of land, valued at $8,000.  Politics, Republican.  Married Ann M. SWINDELL; she was born in North Carolina Dec. 2, 1825; mother of four living children – Robert A. N., Alice, Enoch and Mercy; lost one child in infancy.  Emigrated direct from Indiana to this county, where he has resided since; came through with teams, and camped out and did their own cooking; settled on Sec. 3; bought some of his land second handed; paid about $2 per acre; came here in limited circumstances; had a wagon and a few household goods, and about $50 in his pocket, but by industry and economy, he has made a good property and home; is located near town and railroad depot.  Had four brothers in the army—two from Iowa and two from Indiana.

HANES, W. A.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 6; P. O. Prairie City; born in Dearborn Co., May 4, 1830; came to this county in 1855; has eighty acres of land, valued at $4,000. Married Melissa GROOMS; she was born in Indiana March 7, 1837; mother of seven children—Homer C., Curtis, Dorsey E., William G, Brayden, Gordon B., Daisey.  Was one of the earliest settlers of the township.  Enlisted in the 23d I. V. I., Co. G; was in the battles of the siege of Vicksburg; also at the siege of Matagorda Island; was also detailed to guard ammunition trains; was mustered out at Harrisburg, Texas; has a brother in the battle of Milliken’s Bend, where one-half of the command was killed.  When he was married, he did not have money enough to buy land large enough to stand her on; but by the sweat of his brow, and industry he has made them a comfortable home.

BUCKINGHAM, was born Aug. 19, 1849; they were married Feb. 15, 1871, and have one child—Nancy Lenora, born Nov. 6, 1873.  Mr. HAYES has been School Director four years, and Road Supervisor.

JEFFRIES, James, (now deceased); was born in Indiana Feb. 8, 1810; came to this county in 1855; had 874 acres of land, valued at $25,000.  Belonged to the M. E. Church.  Married for his first wife, Martha STOLL April 19, 1834; she died March 17, 1851; she was the mother of six children—Francis F., born Feb. 23, 1836; was killed at Pilot Knob, Mo.; shot on picket duty; was a member of the 14th I. V. I.; Mary A., born May 15, 1838; Elizabeth, Jan. 18, 1841; Thomas W., Aug. 23, 1842; Sarepta, July 6, 1844; Phebe, Jan. 20, 1849; all but two have crossed to the other side.  For his second wife, he married Mary E. WYATT, born in West Virginia Aug. 23, 1826; mother of six living children—Oliver, born Sept. 19, 1853; Margaret, Feb. 10, 1855; Marta, Jan. 5, 1857; Delano, March 10, 1859; Sarah J., Aug. 20, 1861; John R., April 16, 1863; James W., July 28, 1866; Lida, Feb. 26, 1871.  Emigrated direct from Indiana to this county, where he lived until his death, which was mourned by a large family and all who knew him.  He came to this county with teams; camped out; was fifteen days making the trip; stopped with Mrs. J.’s brother-in-law, where they stayed four weeks, then moved into a little log shanty, until he built his house, where the family now reside.  Did their trading mostly at Des Moines.  In Prairie City there were a few houses and one small store, kept by a man of the name BUTTERS.  Mr. J. came here with some money, made his family a good home, and was one of the influential and respected farmers of the county.

Y., in 1831; they were married in March, 1853, and have eight children—Sarah Jane, Mary C., Charles, Alida W., Rachel W., Charlotte, Jeremiah B. and Dora E.

LOTTS, Wm.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 5; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Gallia Co., Ohio, April 15, 1825; came to this county in 1872; has 280 acres of land, valued at $14,000.  Belongs to the United Brethren Church.  Married Esther A. WEBB; she was born in Ross Co., Ohio, Dec. 29, 1829; mother of three children—Malissa J., Francis O., Sarah E.; emigrated to Knox Co., Ill., in 1837; lived there thirty-three years; Galesburg at that time was a very small place; did their trading at Knoxville, then the county seat; his father lived there until 1875, when he died; his mother died ten days before; from Knox Co. came to Jasper Co.; has a very fine home, and a fine grove around his house, 25 to 40 feet high, planted with his own hands only six years ago; fine yard full of flowers; has a good orchard and plenty of small fruit; has a fine home, and is one of the sound farmers of the county.

LYONS, J. K.; Postmaster; Prairie City; born in Edenton, Clermont Co., Ohio, Dec. 14, 1842; came to this county in 1869.  Politics, Republican.  Was appointed in 1873 to the office of Postmaster.  Enlisted in Co. G, 1st Ohio V. C.; was in the battles of Moulton, Ala., Dallas, Noonday Creek, Big Shanty, Bull Knob, Kenesaw Mountain, Roseville, Rough and Ready, Jonesboro, Monte Vallo, Ebenezer Church, Selma and Columbus; was discharged at Columbus, Ohio, on Sept., 1865.  Mr. L. met with a serious accident; got his arm in the big belt of a steam threshing machine, breaking it three times, causing amputation.
