Lewis (also in Buena Vista Tp.), Peter (residing in Cass Co.), and Henry

In 1838, they started West; remained over Winter in Illinois, and, in
Spring of 1839, came to Iowa, settling near Fairfield, and in 18944, moved to
this county, settling a few miles from where he now lives; he had, however, come
the Fall before, and broken some land; at that time, there was not a family in
what is now Elk Creek Tp.; at that time, deer and wild turkeys were numerous
quite close to his residence; now, not one could be found in many days travel;
the first school in the neighborhood was taught in his house by Miss Eliza
DURHAM; their children are Myron M., Frances A. (now Mrs. DEARINGER), Philip P.
was a member of Co. E, 40th I. V. I.; he was killed at the battle of
Jenkins’ Ferry, April 30, 1862, in his 22d year; Woodbury was a member of Co.,
L, 9thI. V. C.; he now resides in Kansas, and Mattie (now Mrs. DEARINGER). Mr. MUDGETT owns 292 acres of land, valued at $12,000. MUDGETT, M.

born in Hanover, Germany, Aug. 26, 1820; he emigrated to America in 1845, coming
at once to St. Louis, Mo., where he lived over a year.
He then enlisted, in 1847, in the 3d Missouri Mounted Volunteers, Co. B,
for service in the Mexican war; was engaged in the battle of Vera Cruz, and
honorably discharged in Oct., 1848, when he returned to St. Louis, and stayed
until the Spring of 1849, and returned to Germany, but stayed only a short time,
and came back to America, and in December, 1849, set out for California via the
Isthmus, where he arrived in the Spring of the following year, and was engaged
in mining most of the time until the Summer of 1854, when he returned to St.
Louis, and in September of that year, came to Iowa and purchased the land on
which he now lives. He then went
back to St. Louis, and a few months after, he married Wilhelmina BARTLEAK, who
is also a native of Hanover, the next Spring they moved to their new home in
Jasper Cp., where they have since resided; their children are William, Huldah
(now Mrs. ANDREWS), Fred, Edward, Theresa, Mina and Louisa. PAYTON, C.;

James; retired farmer; Galesburg; born in Knox Co., Tenn., Jan. 4, 1809; moved
to Wayne Co., Ky., with his parents when about 12 years old; remained till he
was about 16 years old, and moved to Pulaski Co.; there he married Mary McDANIEL
June 8, 1829; she was born in Pulaski Co., April 25, 1812; in 1830, they moved
to Monroe Co., Ind., and remained till 1846, when they moved to Hendricks Co.,
and stayed till 1855, and moved to this county, settling within a quarter mile
of this village; his children are Chesley, who was born in Kentucky, but now
resides in this township; James H., born in Kentucky, enlisted in the 7th
Minn. V. I., Co. F, and was killed at Murfreesboro by a cannon ball, Nov. 7,
1864; Elizabeth, deceased; Tilman H., born in Indiana Dec. 1, 1840, enlisted
July, 1861, in the 5th Iowa V. I., Co. D; was severely wounded at
Iuka, Sept. 19, 1862, and taken to the hospital at St. Louis; was discharged for
disability on account of wounds, March, 1863; Martha A., now Mrs. MAYFIELD,
resides in Lynnville; is County Superintendent of Schools of this county; Mary,
Nancy E., Milton C., Harman S. and Horace G., deceased.

thence, in Spring of 1850, near Martin’s Ferry, on the Des Moines River, but
the same Fall moved to Jasper Co., Fairview Tp., where they remained till 1857,
and moved to Kansas, but returned to the old farm in Fairview Tp., in the Spring
of 1860; there the subject of this sketch remained one year, and June 24, 1861,
enlisted in Co. B, 5th I. V. I., and participated in the battles of
Iuka,, Mission Ridge, siege of Vicksburg, and many other engagements; was
honorably discharged Aug. 11, 1864, and returned to this county.
Married Mary WOOD Feb. 5, 1865; she is a native of Indiana; their
children are Mahala, Wallace, Jessie, Laura, Frank and Edna.
