Lucas County, Iowa A Unless otherwise noted, biographies submitted by Dick Barton. Alexander,
G. W., attorney at law, post-office, Chariton. Born March 7, 1845, in Jefferson
county, Tennessee, where he remained until 1861. He then enlisted in the
Confederate service, in the 31st Tennessee infantry, and served until the close
of the war, participating in the battles of Richmond, Perryville, Stone River,
Vicksburg, the battle of the Wilderness, and all the engagements between
Generals Sheridan and Early, until September 2, 1864, when he was captured and
imprisoned until the close of the war. His brigade was mounted after the capture
of Vicksburg. During the service he was promoted from lieutenant to captain. At
the close of the war he came to Iowa, locating in Dubuque, where he remained
eight years. While in Dubuque he read law with W. T. Barker, and was admitted to
the bar in November, 1871. In 1872, he came to Lucas county, and is now
practicing law in Chariton. He was married December 30, 1872, in Delaware
county, Iowa, to Clara H. Dodson. Alexander, James, nurseryman, post-office, Chariton. He is a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and was born June 29, 1846. His early youth was passed in farming and attending the rural schools. In 1856 he came with his parents to Iowa, locating in this county. In 1872, he came to his present residence, and engaged largely in the nursery business, which has proved a success in all respects. Was married December 25, 1868, to Miss Alsia J. Cubberson, of Muskingum county, Ohio. Eight children were born to them: William, Maggie, Ralph, Harry, Lewis, John and an infant. He enlisted, may, 1864, in company K, 46th Iowa infantry, and served five months. He has served creditably as justice of the peace and assessor. He owns the Hillside nursery, which is one of the best. ANDERSON, G. A., Merchant, Lucas , Iowa . Is a native of Sweden , born August 21, 1853 ; was brought up and educated in the land of his nativity. In 1873, he came to America , settling in Lucas. Mr. Anderson began as a laborer in various capacities, and by industry and economy acquired means to open a business in groceries, hardware, etc., which has steadily increased. There is no excellence without great labor. He was married January 1, 1881 , to Miss H. S. Dalin, a lady of refinement. |
