JOHN
BARCUS, farmer, living in Sherman Township, came to Monona County in
April, 1863, and brought his family here about the 1st of October of
the same year, traveling from Licking County, Ohio, with a horse team.
With him came his mother-in-law, Mary Kelley, and her son Jackson.
Mr. Barcus is a
native of Maryland, born June 14, 1807, and is the son of George and
Sarah (Prichard) Barcus. His father dying when our subject was about
seven years of age, he remained at home working on the farm, and in
maturer years took charge of the homestead. In November, 1829, he married
Isabel Burgess, who died in September, 1850, leaving seven children.
The next year he was united in marriage with Miss Fidelia Buck, who
became the mother of five children and died May 12, 1881.
