CALL FIRST 316 CAROLL COUNTY MEN TO U.S. ARMY

County Must Furnish 158 Men for Actual Service; Call Twice That Number for Examination to Provide for Possible Exemptions of Half.

WILL BE CALLED FOR EXAMINATION VERY SOON

Many Aliens, Including Subjects of Germany, in First 316 Drawn — Big Lottery Interests Every Person in County as Names are Announced

Carroll county's interest centered around the ticking telegraph instruments in the J. R. Whitney offices last Friday as the returns from the great army drawing at Washington came over the wires, and as rapidly as the names were bulletined a great crowd gathered on the streets to learn the names of those chosen. The stream of country people coming into the city continued all day and into the evening, and was repeated to a great extent Saturday as corrected revised and final returns were received.

The first seven names were bulletined by the Times about 10 o'clock Friday, and by noon twenty more had been added. Then, at intervals all afternoon, messengers hurried to and from the Whitney offices with additions to the list. By four o'clock 254 names had been secured, and a few minutes later the Times issued an extra edition bearing them, which was gobbled up by the hundreds by people on the streets, and there was a steady stream coming to the office for copies. Bundles of these were mailed all over the county, so that by the next morning the news was very generally known.

The first list as published bore a substantially correct list of names, but not all were placed in the order in which they were drawn. This list has been corrected and revised, and added to until it is published in this issue of the paper with 316 men listed, or those comprising the first call from this county.

Carroll county will be called upon to furnish 158 men for active service at the front, and therefore, to provide for exemptions, the first 316 drawn, as published below, will be called for examination. In this list there are 122 single men not claiming exemption. Considering that some of these will be rejected because of physical disability, and that some of those claiming exemption will not be excused, it is possible that the entire 158 will not be secured from this bunch. In that event, the next hundred or more numbers in the list will have to be called for examination. Therefore, those whose names and numbers are not found in the list below are not entirely safe from the draft until 158 men have been found for active service.

Joe Lengeling, of Breda, No. 258, was the first man called, and others will be called on down the line through the entire county list until 158 have been listed for active service. The numbers of others drawn are given following the list of names, and if it is necessary to call for more than this first 316 the Times will publish the list of names of the next call later.

Every number in the county was drawn, the drawing being merely to designate the order in which they should be called to the colors. Those farther down in the list who are not called at this time may be drafted by the government later this year or early next year without another drawing. In fact, it is certain that they will be called unless the war ends sooner than is expected in most quarters.

The following list of 316 names gives the men drawn, their serial registration numbers, address, age, occupation, social status and reasons for claiming exemption, if any given other than because married.
