Allen S. Coon
Allen S.
Coon, whose demise occurred on the 9th of November, 1908, had been a resident
of Delaware county for more than a half century and devoted his attention to
general agricultural pursuits throughout his active business career. His birth
occurred in Allen county, Indiana, on the
5th of October, 1843, his parents being Amos F. and Susanna (Wheeler) Coon, both
of whom were natives of the state of New York. In 1836 they removed to Indiana, where they entered a tract of land
and continued to reside until 1857. In that year they came to Delaware county, Iowa, here settling on land that had been entered in
1854 by Mr. Coon, on which they spent the remainder of their lives. They became
the parents of six children, four of whom grew to maturity.
Allen S.
Coon, who was a youth of fourteen when he came to this county with his parents,
remained at home until thirty-three years of age or until the time of his
marriage. General agricultural pursuits claimed his attention throughout his
active business career and at the time of his demise he owned a valuable and
highly improved farm of three hundred and twenty acres in Delaware township,
which is now in possession of his widow. When he passed away it was generally
conceded that the county had lost one of its representative and highly respected
citizens. His remains were interred in the Rock Prairie cemetery.
In 1876 Mr.
Coon was joined in wedlock to Miss Mary D. Andrews, a native of Allen county,
Indiana, and a daughter of Theron and Louisa (Potter)
Andrews, natives of New York. They removed to Indiana with their respective parents in
early life, were married in the Hoosier state and there continued to reside
until they passed away. Their children were four in number and three survive.
To Mr. and Mrs. Coon were born three children, as follows: Luella A., whose
birth occurred March 21, 1877, and who died at the age of five
years; Theron A., born January 4,
1879, who
is a resident of Oelwein, Iowa; and Harlo A., born September
2, 1884,
who is still with his widowed mother. Mr. Coon was a democrat in politics
and a valued member of the Grange. Mrs. Coon, who now makes her home in Manchester, enjoys an extensive acquaintance
throughout the community, having won many friends during the long period of her
residence here.
