MRS. ELIZABETH GIBBS
HUNT COUSINS
Mrs.
Elizabeth Gibbs Hunt Cousins was born in England
but in 1858 accompanied her parents, John and Elizabeth (Bun) Gibbs, to the new
world when but eight years of age. Her father and mother were also natives of England and passed away in this
county. In their family were thirteen children, seven of whom survive.
Miss Elizabeth Gibbs first wedded James Hunt, who died on the 18th of
February, 1889, and was laid to rest
in the Fairview cemetery at Earlville. To this
union were born fifteen children, fourteen of whom survive. Robert, born December 7, 1864,
is a farmer of Oneida township. George,
born December 15, 1867, is a merchant of
Earlville. Nellie, born May 10, 1870, is the wife of Lewis
Sperring, a farmer of Oneida township. Alice,
born October 27, 1871,
is the wife of Nels
Garrenson, of Winnebago county,
Iowa. William, born March 13, 1873, is a merchant of
Earlville. James, born July 3, 1874, and Sidney, born January 12, 1876, are both farmers of Delaware
county. Phebe,
born May 22, 1877, is the wife of J. W.
Melvin, county attorney of Bellefourche, South Dakota. Darley, born December 6, 1878,
is a farmer of Delaware county. Edith S., born September 24, 1880, is the wife of Henry Arnold, also a farmer of
this county. Henry,
born September 4, 1883, is a farmer of this
county. Elsie, born July 28, 1884, is the wife of Leslie Tietge, of Des Moines. Lester, born February 7, 1886, is a farmer of Delaware county. Eva May, born December 1, 1888, is the wife of Harry
Stahlie, of Hancock, Minnesota. In 1898 Mrs. Hunt married Thomas
Cousins, a native of England, who came to this
country in early life. He
passed away in September, 1900, and was buried in Fairview cemetery.
Mrs. Cousins owns eleven hundred and twenty acres of land in this
county, all of which is under a high state of cultivation. She also owns town
property in Earlville, which is the finest residence in the town. She is a
woman of unusual business ability and manages all of her extensive interests in
a highly capable manner. She attends the
Congregational church and the strict integrity of her daily life is the best
testimony to the genuineness of her religious faith. All who know her respect her for her ability
and for her integrity, while her personal friends hold her in affectionate
regard because of attractive qualities of character.
