NELSON E. DAVIS
Nelson E.
Davis is associated with Wilbur D. Hoyt in the conduct of an implement business
in Manchester and is recognized as a business man
of ability. He was born in Delaware county on the
10th of July, 1864, a son of Edwin Davis, who was born near Hartford, Connecticut, April 4,
1830, and came
to Iowa in the early '50s, when the state
was still a pioneer region.
He was a
farmer and school teacher and won the full confidence and respect of all who
knew him. He married Sarah Ann Ferris, a native of Erie county, Ohio, born
February 10, 1834, and she passed away January 31, 1874, when but forty years
of age. To their union were born three children: Leora
M., the wife of J. B. Sullivan; Herbert, likewise a resident of Manchester; and Nelson E., the subject of this
review.
The last
named received his education in the common schools of this county and in the
Bay less Commercial College at Dubuque. After leaving school he farmed for
fifteen years and then removed to Manchester and embarked in the implement
business in 1898. He has since that time been associated with Mr. Hoyt and has
been an important factor in securing the continued success of the business. He
has other interests, as he owns an excellent farm which he rents.
Mr. Davis
was married on the 6th of March, 1884, to Miss Florence L. Porter, a
native of Illinois and a daughter of W. R. and Felinda (Colvin) Porter. Her father was a farmer by
occupation but is now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Davis have
been born two children: Edwin R., who married Miss Charlotte Atwater, and is
employed in clerical work in Manchester; and Amber, who
is a sophomore in Cornell College at Mount Vernon.Mr. Davis is a republican in his political belief
and his religious faith is attested by his membership in the Methodist church.
Fraternally he is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Masons
and the Modern Woodmen of America. His life has been a useful one and not only
has he aided in the development of a successful business, but he has discharged
in full all obligations resting upon him as a citizen.
