FRANK L. GIBBS
Frank L. Gibbs owns two hundred and eighty-two acres in Bremen and North Fork townships and is
meeting with well deserved success in the cultivation of his land. He was born in this county on the 27th of September, 1877, a son of Edward and Ada L. (Pilgrim) Gibbs.
The father was a native of England and emigrated
to the United States in 1852, when a youth
of thirteen years. He came immediately
to Delaware county and
devoted his time to farm work. He
eventually became the owner of one hundred and sixty-one acres of land and
operated it successfully until his death, which occurred September 15, 1893. The
mother was a daughter of Henry R. and Elizabeth (Clifton) Pilgrim, natives of England. In 1853 they came to the United States and located first in Cleveland, Ohio, where the father
engaged in the nursery and greenhouse business for about five years. He then removed to Dyersville, Dubuque county, Iowa, and for about three
years teamed from Dubuque to Dyersville. At the end of that time he came to this
county and rented a farm, which he operated.
His wife died in 1861 and he later married Mrs. Sarah Pierce. He died at Greeley in September,
1910. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gibbs were
married on the 22d of February, 1872, and became the parents of three children:
Ellen L., who married F. M. Clifton, of Earlville; Alice A., the wife of James
E. Kenney, of Earlville; and Frank L., the
subject of this review.
The last named attended the district schools
in the pursuit of an education and grew to manhood in this county. He is a
farmer by occupation and owns two hundred and eighty-two acres of good land
situated in Bremen and North Fork townships and derives a
good annual income from his agricultural labors. He raises graded
cattle and full blooded Duroc Jersey hogs in addition to
cultivating the fields and as he manages his business well his assets are
steadily increasing.
Mr. Gibbs was married on the 10th of March, 1904, to Miss Emma Gertrude Orvis, a daughter of C. F. and Mary E. (Phelps) Orvis, natives of Ohio and Princeton, Illinois, respectively. Their
marriage occurred in the latter place and in 1875 they removed to Nebraska, where they lived until
1900. They then settled at Dubuque, Iowa, where the father died February 5, 1914, and where the mothers still makes her
home. To Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs have been
born three children, as follows: Harry Edward, whose birth occurred November
14, 1906; James Orvis, born December 8, 1908; and Frank Leslie, born December
15, 1911.
Mr. Gibbs is a republican and is a member of the
republican county central committee. He
is widely known throughout the county and all who have been brought into
contact with him rightly consider him a successful agriculturist and a just and
upright man.
