Samuel Vinton Hubbell

Vinton Hubbell, who passed away in Greeley on the 12th
of December, 1905, when about sixty-eight years of age, had been a resident of Delaware county for
a period of forty-five years and had accumulated extensive property interests
in Honey Creek township. In connection with farming he also bought and sold
stock and conducted a general store in Greeley.
His birth
occurred in Meigs county, Ohio, on the 26th
of December, 1837, his parents being Barsley and Eliza (Bellows)
Hubbell. He spent the first fourteen years of his life in the place of his
nativity and in the acquirement of an education attended the common schools of McLean county, Illinois. In 1860, when a
young man of about twenty-three years, he came to Delaware county, Iowa, here making his
home throughout the remainder of his life. He located in Honey Creek township and there carried
on agricultural pursuits successfully, acquiring large property interests. In
connection with farming he also bought and sold stock and likewise conducted a
general store at Greeley, winning success in his various
undertakings by reason of his excellent business ability and judicious
management. About 1887, however, he abandoned his mercantile pursuits and from
that time until his death devoted his attention to his private interests.
On the
19th of September, 1867, Mr. Hubbell was joined in wedlock to Miss Marie Coolidge,
who was born May 30, 1844, a daughter of Daniel M. and Eliza
M. (Alcorn) Coolidge. They had one son, Herbert L., who was born May
10, 1869,
and died on the 24th of January, 1884.
Mr. Hubbell
was a stanch republican in politics and took a deep and helpful interest in all
public affairs, but never sought nor desired the honors and emoluments of
office. He belonged to the Sons of Temperance and the Ancient Order of United
Workmen, while his religious faith was indicated by his membership in the Universalist church, in the work of which he took an active
part. Following her husband's death, in March, 1906, Mrs. Hubbell took up her
abode in Manchester, where she has since resided. She is widely and favorably
known throughout the community, the number of her friends having steadily grown
as the circle of her acquaintance has broadened.
