Cadwalader Jones well deserves to be classed
among the self-made men of Delaware county,
for coming here a poor man, he has through his well directed efforts
accumulated a valuable farm property of two hundred and forty acres. He
is of foreign birth, his native country being North Wales, and he was born in February, 1862.
He is the third in order of birth in a family of nine children, whose parents were
William and Eleanor Jones, likewise natives of North Wales, where they lived and died. Mr.
Jones was reared in his native country and was there employed to the age of twenty-two
years, when, believing opportunities awaited him in America, he set sail for
this country, making his way at once to Delaware county, Iowa. He began life
here in a humble capacity, working for two years as a farm laborer for a Mr.
Thompson. He eventually returned to his native land and was there married to
Miss Sarah Roberts, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Roberts, the former of
whom is still living but the latter is deceased.
Following
his marriage, Mr. Jones returned with his bride to Iowa and purchased one hundred and sixty
acres of land in section 3, Delaware township,
on which property he has since made his home. He is here engaged
in general farming but makes a specialty of stock-raising. He has met with splendid
success in his business ventures and has been able to extend his acreage
through the purchase of eighty acres of land on section 14,
Delaware township,
so that his landed possessions now comprise two hundred and forty acres. All
this is finely improved and the fields return to him bounteous harvests for the
labor which he expends upon them.
The
marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Jones has been blessed with three sons and three
daughters, as follows: Margaret E., the wife of F. E. Tracy, a resident of
Nashua, Iowa; William D., who is married and resides in Delaware county; John;
Catherine, at home; Mary, who is attending school in Cedar Falls, Iowa; and
Dewey J.
The parents
are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Mr.
Jones gives his political support to the republican party. He has never been active
in public life, however, the only office he has ever filled being
that of school director for two terms. He is truly a self-made man, for when he
came to America thirty years ago he had no means,
but through his own ambition and determination and the aid of a valuable
helpmate he has acquired a property that today places him among the substantial
and well-to-do citizens of Delaware county.
