George A. Miller, a farmer and
stock-raiser residing on section 22, Milo township, is the owner of a well
improved tract of land comprising one hundred and twenty acres. His birth occurred
in Stephenson county, Illinois, on the 22d of
November, 1861, his parents being Jacob and Catherine Miller. In 1874 they journeyed
to Delaware county, Iowa, by wagon and took up their abode
on a farm in Milo township. To them were born ten children,
all of whom survive, as follows: Sarah, who is the wife of John Haynes, of
Cedar Rapids, Iowa; George A., of this review; Mary, who is the widow of Lorin Barker and resides in this county; Anna, who gave her
hand in marriage to Joseph Phyfe and makes her home
in Oklahoma; Fred, a resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Oscar, living in Delaware
county; Rose, who is the wife of Hosea Webber, of Manchester; Emily, the wife
of John A. Dunlap, of Milo township; Otis, who also lives in Milo township; and
Oris, of this county.
George A.
Miller, who acquired his education in the district schools of Illinois, was a youth of thirteen when he
came with his parents to Delaware county.
Here he has devoted his time and energies to general agricultural pursuits
throughout his entire business career, being now the owner of a farm of one
hundred and twenty acres six miles southeast of Manchester, which he has brought to a high
state of cultivation and improvement. He raises graded stock in connection with
the cultivation of cereals, and both branches of his business are proving
gratifyingly remunerative.
On the
30th of October, 1887, Mr. Miller was united in marriage to Miss Harriet
Olmstead, a daughter of Everett and Ada (Burdick) Olmstead. To them have
been born five children, as follows: George Lyle, who belongs to the state
militia and resides in Delaware county;
Minerva, at home, who is a graduate of the public schools of Manchester; Clinton, also at home; and two who died in
infancy. George A. Miller has been a resident of this county during the past
four decades and is widely recognized as one of its prosperous, public-spirited
and representative citizens.
