AUGUST F. SANDHAGEN
August F. Sandhagen, who has lived in Delaware county for nearly four
decades and receives a gratifying annual income as an agriculturist, owns and operates a farm of eighty-nine acres
on sections 33 and 28, Richland township. His birth
occurred in Du Page county, Illinois, on the 1st of January, 1865, his parents being Henry and Henrietta
(Lartz) Sandhagen, both of whom were natives of Germany. In 1850 they crossed
the Atlantic to the United States, settling first in Cook
county, Illinois, and subsequently in Du
Page county, that state, while the year 1876 witnessed their arrival in Delaware county, Iowa. Here they purchased
the farm in Richland township which is now
in the possession of our subject,
continuing to reside thereon throughout the remainder of their lives. Their
children were six in number, as follows: Charles; Lewis; Albert; Christiana,
who is the wife of R. C. Hilliger; Louisa, who is deceased; and August F., of
this review.
The last named, who was a youth of eleven when
he came to this county with his parents, acquired his education in the common
schools and remained at home until
twenty years of age. Subsequently he purchased the old homestead farm of
eighty-nine acres on sections 33 and 28, Richland township and has been actively
and continuously engaged in its operation to the present time. In connection
with the cultivation of cereals he
makes a specialty of stock-raising and dairying and conducts all branches of
his business in a practical, progressive manner that brings desired results.
Mr.
Sandhagen has been married twice. In
1884 he wedded Mrs. Minnie Hacker, a native of Germany, and in 1905 he was
again married, his second union being with Miss Ethel Rogers, who was
born in Coffins Grove township, this
county, June
8, 1884.
Her parents were Thomas and Alice (Scott) Rogers, the former a native of England and the latter of New York. They came to Iowa in an early day,
settling in Delaware county, and here Thomas
Rogers passed away. To him and his wife, who survives, were
born four children, all of whom are
yet living. To Mr. and Mrs. Sandhagen
have been born three children, namely: Walter A., whose birth occurred December 5, 1906; Earl Roy, whose natal day was February
7, 1909: and Martha L., who was born June 14, 1912,
and died on the 9th of July following.
Mr. Sandhagen gives his political allegiance to
the democracy and has ably served in the capacity of school director. His
religious faith is indicated by his membership
in the Lutheran church, to which his wife also belongs. The period of
his residence in Delaware county covers nearly four decades, and he has long
been numbered among its esteemed and representative citizens as well as its
substantial agriculturists.
