Lewis E. Sperring resides upon a farm of one hundred
and sixty-eight acres located on section 32, Bremen township, and is meeting with
well deserved success in his agricultural activities. He was born in New Vienna
township, Dubuque county, Iowa, May 6, 1866, a son of Sylvester and Ellen (Day)
Sperring, the former a native of England.
After
completing his common-school education Lewis E. Sperririg
attended the Dyersville high school. Since starting out in life for himself he
has concentrated his energies upon farming and is now operating one hundred and
sixty-eight acres of fine land situated upon section 32, Bremen township,
three miles east of Earlville. His labors are intelligently directed and the
farm annually produces excellent crops which bring good prices upon the market.
In addition to the cultivation of the fields he raises considerable live stock
as he realizes that this method of farming insures the least waste.
On the
12th of March, 1890, Mr. Sperring was united in marriage with
Miss Ellen Hunt, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Gibbs) Hunt, both natives
of England. The father was brought to this
country by his parents when a lad of seven years and the family home was
maintained in Ohio for a few years, after which a removal was made to Delaware county.
The mother, who was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bun) Gibbs, accompanied her parents
to the new world when but eight years of age. Mr. Hunt passed away February
16, 1889,
and his widow subsequently married Thomas Cousins, who has also passed away.
Mrs. Cousins resides in Earlville, where she is greatly respected by all who
know her. To Mr. and Mrs. Sperring six children were
born but only four are living, namely: Alice E., Winnie May and Rosie Belle,
all of whom were born in Delaware county; and Earl Lewis, whose birth
occurred in Winnebago county, this state.
Mr. Sperring is a member of King Lodge, No. 592, I. O. O. F.,
at Thompson, Winnebago county, Iowa, and also belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America.
Politically he gives his allegiance to the republican party
and has served acceptably as road supervisor. He has many friends, who value his
good-will highly as they know him to be a man of integrity and honor.
