PAUL STEGER
Paul Steger, who owns and operates one hundred and ninety acres of land situated
on section 21, Bremen township,
is a native son of that township, born November 22, 1873. His parents, Paul and Margaret (Nackmann) Steger, were both born in Germany. The father was a young man of
twenty-one when he emigrated to the United States, and located first in Dubuque
county, where he remained about ten years, after which he came to this county
and bought the farm which is now in the possession of his son Paul. The mother
accompanied her parents to America when a girl about fifteen years of
age and became a resident of Delaware county, where the family home was
established. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Steger, Sr., were married in Dubuque and to them were born eleven
children, one of whom died in infancy. The others were: Andrew, who resides in
Bremen township; John, who died July 26, 1913; Joseph, whose home is in Minnesota;
Theresa, the wife of A. Sheyer, of Dyersville, this
state; Verona, who married Henry Hense, of Dubuque;
Paul, of this review; Herman, who lives in Bremen township; Elizabeth, who
resides in Dubuque with her sister, Mrs. Hense; Frank
of Bremen township; and Margaret, the wife of Frank Trumm,
of Bremen township. The father died in March, 1903, and the mother survived
until February, 1906.
Paul Steger
received his education in the common schools of his home neighborhood and as
soon as large enough began assisting his father with the work of the homestead,
thus becoming familiar with practical agriculture. Since coming to mature years
he has continued in the occupation to which he was reared and now owns the home
farm, which consists of one hundred and ninety acres and is located on section
21, Bremen township. It was well improved
when it came into his possession but he has still further developed it until it
is one of the valuable places of his locality. He follows general farming and pays
considerable attention to the raising of graded stock and as sound judgment and
industry are among his salient characteristics his activities yield him a good
annual income.
On the
28th of February, 1905, Mr. Steger was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Schlickmann, a daughter of John and Mary J. (Fangmann) Schlickmann. To Mr. and
Mrs. Steger was born a son, Richard, whose natal day was January
6, 1906.
The mother was called from this life on January 15th of the same year.
Mr. Steger
gives his political allegiance to the democratic party
and takes a laudable interest in everything pertaining to the public welfare.
His entire life has been passed in this county and those who have known him
intimately from boyhood esteem him highly as a man of honor and strict
adherence to principles of right and justice.
