WILLIAM H. TODD
William H. Todd, a prominent and
successful agriculturist of Delaware county,
owns three hundred and sixty acres of land on sections 7 and 18, comprising
one of the finest farms in Milo township. His birth occurred in that
township on the 8th of June, 1858, his parents being J.
T. and Carolina (Procter) Todd, the
former a native of Vermont and the latter of England. They came to Iowa in the early '50s and
took up their abode on the farm which is now in the possession of our subject.
William H. Todd attended the common schools in
the acquirement of an education and on attaining his majority took charge of
the old home farm, which he has operated continuously and successfully since.
He has erected substantial and commodious buildings on the property, has
planted a fine grove and has enhanced its value and attractiveness to a
considerable extent. His place comprises three hundred and sixty acres of rich
and productive land on sections 7 and 18, Milo township,
and, as above stated, is one of the best improved and most valuable farms in
the township. The prosperity which has attended his labors is attributable
entirely to his own efforts, and he may well lay claim to the proud American
title of a self-made man.
In 1886 Mr. Todd was united in marriage to Miss
Cora Duffey, a native of Milo township
and a daughter of H. P. and Anna Duffey. The father
was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and the mother in England. She emigrated
to the United States in company with her
parents. To Mr. and Mrs. Todd have been born
seven children, as follows: Wita May, born March 16,
1888, who is a graduate of Hahnemann Hospital
and is now a trained nurse in Chicago; Roy James, whose birth occurred January
10, 1890, and who is a high-school graduate; Eva H., born May 22, 1891, who
follows the profession of teaching; Laura Mabel, who was born May 20, 1893, and
also engages in teaching; Freda Fern, born November 3, 1897, who is a
high-school student; Lillian M., whose natal day was May 28, 1900, and who is
now attending high school; and Zella Ruby, born May
9, 1904, who is in the seventh grade of grammar school.
Mr. Todd gives his political allegiance
to the republican party and has ably served as school
director and road superintendent. He is identified fraternally with the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows at Manchester, and his wife belongs
to the Methodist Episcopal church. They are well known
in Delaware county, where
they have always resided and where their personal worth and excellent qualities
of mind and character have gained them many friends.
