Mr. William Ferguson Obituary

Mr. William Ferguson, one of Hopkinton's honored and truest citizens, passed away Saturday morning, July 25th, age 76 years, 10 months and 24 days. The funeral services were held in the Reformed Presbyterian Church with the pastor, Rev. S. T. Foster in charge, assisted by Dr. Reed and Rev. Bindberger.  Interment was made in the Hopkinton cemetery.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Armagh County, Ireland, and came over to America when 16 years old.  He lived in Rochester, NY for two years, then settled in Canada for some 17 years.  Again he settled in the United States in Wisconsin for six years.  Returning to Canada for a brief visit, he was married and settled with his bride in Linn Co., Iowa, where he lived for 12 years.  In 1881, he moved to Buck Creek, Delaware Co., IA, remaining there until about six years ago, when he moved his home to Hopkinton, leaving his son to look after the farm.

Trained in a Covenanter home in Ireland, Mr. Ferguson connected himself with the Hopkinton Covenanter Church the year after he settled in this vicinity.  He has been a most faithful member of the Church, ever anxious for its welfare.  He was not inclined to strive for public honors, but his life has been a constant testimony as to the sincerity of his professions.  His beliefs are firm, his religion was genuine.  Regular in his attendance upon Divine worship except when detained away by sickness alone; a faithful student of the Bible; very benevolent to all good works (very few ever came to him for aid, but received it); a man whose heart was full of love for others (remembering that he was once a stranger, he delighted to entertain strangers); kind to his family, a faithful husband and father, who trained his children by family religion in the fear of the Lord; a man of pure character and clean habits, such a man as Mr. Ferguson is a distinct loss to the church and the community, but his life bids us go and do likewise.  He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
