IOWA TERRITORY 

 

Most of this area in 1804 was part of the Louisiana Purchase.

Soon, by act of legislature, this area became part of the Missouri Territory.

When Missouri became a state in 1821, this territory became an unorganized territory. The area was closed to white settlers until the 1830s. After the Black Hawk War ended, it was attached to the Michigan Territory on June 28, 1834

In 1836 the Wisconsin Territory was reduced in size when Michigan Territory became a state.

Then Iowa Territory became known as "Iowa District" of western Wisconsin Territory, all that region west of the Mississippi River

The area west of the Mississippi River was closed to white settlers until the 1830s.

When the Black Hawk War ended, it was attached to the Michigan Territory on June 28, 1834.

In 1836 the Wisconsin Territory became a state.

The original boundaries of the territory included Minnesota and parts of the Dakotas.

In 1830 Burlington was the temporary capital of Iowa until Iowa City was named the official territorial capital in 1841.
