Obituaries For Des Moines County, Iowa Thanks To Barb Chandler

I have a bit more to ad to the bio of Thomas McColgan I found today. I think that is about it though. The hospital destroys their records after 10 years but at least we know where and when he died if not how. And I have found all but one missing daughter and I believe she died as there is no record of her in the census after 1860. There are no marriage records in either Iowa or Colorado and the obits of both Thomas Sr. and Jr. do not mention her only the ones that are accounted for. so here is the rest of the story, there may be details to unearth later but here are the facts. I have found Anna in the 1880 census for Sunshine CO. m. to R. D. Kenney no children. Elizabeth and Caswell had one child Harry born Sept of 1864 so I guess now we know why Elizabeth and Caswell married. Harry was raised as Harry Sparks (according to the census’ after the marriage of Elizabeth and John Sparks prior to the 1870 census until he is married then he goes by Armfield. I find no record of a child for Harry and his wife in the census’ and Elizabeth and John have no children, at least that are listed. I am thinking that Caswell died shortly after Harry was born and Elizabeth went to Colorado with her family and met John and married. In the obit for Thomas (the father) it says he is survived by 3 daughters so Eleanor Ellen is still missing and presumed dead by 1889 when the father died as all other children are accounted for in his obit. When Thomas W. dies 1897 he lists only 2 sisters still living. And his only son who lived was my grandfather, who had 2 children, my aunt had 2 daughters and my dad had 5, and we all know where each other are. So it looks like there will be no others searching this line unless Cora’s children Olive or Margarette came through with someone. Cora’s son Raymond looks like he didn’t’ have any children either.

This is pretty strange for a family of 6 children to not have anyone left behind, it usually seems to grow in succeeding generations! So, that is about the best I can do as far as what happened to everyone unless something shows up somewhere about Eleanor. Thank you so much for all of your help. This info above is not listed in the bio I sent as I just found this out today. Thanks again! Dorene

RICHARD JENSEN DEAD--Well Known Fresco Painter Passed Away Yesterday
Morning

Richard Jensen passed away yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, after a brief
illness at the comparatively early age of fifty-five. He was of high
stature, powerful build and seemed destined to reach and pass the limit
alloted to man. He was a painter, a superior workman, an artist. He has
done much of the best fresco work in public and private buildings in
Burlington and neighboring cities. While in the employ of the Burlington
route, he did the finest work on the passenger coaches and sleepers.

He was of a general, sunny disposition, a "good comrade," well read,
well educated, had seen much of the world, a good talker and again a
good listener, a staunch true friend, the very best kind of neighbor,
and a throughly honest and honorable man. His home life was very
pleasant, and he brought up good children, who are a credit to their
parents, and who will keep his memory green.

Richard Jensen was a native of Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and
was fifty-five years of age. He crossed the seas some thirty years ago
and came to Burlington two years there-after making his permanent home.
He is survived by the widow, ten children: Bernard, Richard, William,
Peter, Agnes, Dora, Laura, Mary, Bertha all of this city and, Mrs. F.H.
Niemeyer of Cedar Rapids, and a very large circle of friends and
acquaintances to mourn his untimely death.

JOHN A. STAFF--Pioneer Resident of Des Moines County is Dead

John A. Staff, one of the pioneers of Des Moines county passed to his
reward this morning at 4 o'clock at his home in the country, southwest
of Burlington. His illness dates since last January but only during the
last two weeks had his condition been serious. No greater testimony of
the high respect in which he was held and the loss felt by his death
could be shown than by the widespread sympathy of the surrounding
country in which he lived.

With the death of Mr. Staff, Des Moines county loses one of the oldest
and best of its representative men. He put honor before everything else
and not an act in his long and useful life was tainted. In this age when
the call of power and gold so often drowns the small clear voice of
conscience, his sincerity and uprightness have stood out and his honest
principles and good judgement was approved by all men. His wonderful
human kindness was never failing and he was an exceptional man in every
way. He was loved by his neighbors, idolized by his family, and honored
by the entire community.

John Staff was born January 2, 1836, coming to this country when
fourteen years of age. He married Miss Rachel Ramsey, February 9, 1859.
Surviving are the wife and the following children: Davis A., Charles E.,
Henry G., Ralph A. Staff and Mrs. Edward Romkey. The funeral service
will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Shiloh church six

Hi Don,

Thank you for your reply.

As I was going through the belongings of my Aunt I found the obituary for
Edna L. Connors, mother of Virginia E. Semple. Edna and her children: John
Connors, Robert E.Connors, Virginia E.Semple and Edna Staples all appear to
have spent most of their lives in Des Moines. Edna was buried at Hamilton's
Funeral Home on 612 Arthur Avenue. She was 85 when she died. The year of
her death is not included.

Based on letters to Aunt Florence, Virginia was married to a Jim Semple and
either her or Jim worked for the House of Representatives. Virginia has
mailed Edna's obituary to my Aunt. She also has sent a clipping of John who
was an Iowa Legislator during the Reagan years. As recently as 1995
Virginia has sent letters to my Aunt.

I know this is not a great deal of information but I hope this provides
something to go on.

Thanks

Shauna
