PERLEE MATHEWS DEAD
After Brief Illness Death Relieves Suffering.
Funeral at Presbyterian Church Saturday

Mr. Perlee Mathews was born in Danville, Iowa, Oct. 16, 1868 and died at his
home east of New London Thursday, Oct. 14, 1909. He lacked two days of being
41 years of age. He was married to Miss Belle Ramsay, Mar. 17, 1898. Three
children were born to them and they with the widow, two brothers of Mr.
Mathews: Ray and Wallace; together with David Mathews, his father survive of
the immediate family.
Mr. Mathews prepared himself for a teacher by a high school education and
attendance at Howe's Academy and taught for 12 years in Henry, Des Moines and
Lee counties, but in the spring of 1898 he settled on the farm east of town,
where he has since resided.
He united with the Congregational church at Danville when 12 years of age, and
later transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church here. He was
Superintendent of the Sabbath school and was an able, willing, and most
interested worker. The funeral service which consisted of a prayer at the
home, sermon at the church, and song and ritual at the grave were conducted by
Rev. E. B. Whitney.
On every side were heard expressions of the profoundest sorrow, and a deep
feeling of loss.
