BURLINGTON MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY The original Burlington cemetery was inside the City of Burlington, Iowa, located at the Northeast corner of the intersection of Central and Market Streets, TAMA TOWNSHIP, Section 32, Des Moines County, Iowa. This once occupied the site of the present High School (in 1968) between Market and Valley Streets. The first burial - which was in the fall of 1833 - was that of WILLIAM ROSS, father of DR. WILLIAM R. ROSS, one of Burlington's earliest settlers. It was a burial place until 1852, at which time the City ordinance disbanding it and forbidding further burials. All persons buried there were removed, as well as all tombstones, fences, etc. Relatives and friends moved loved ones to other locations, some to Aspen Grove. Those left were moved to Burlington Cemetery, north of Aspen Grove. This area later became known as Potter's Field and is
today located within Aspen Grove." |
