Postcard History of Dubuque County, Iowa

Views of Downtown Dubuque

Many towns promote tourism and economic development through postcards. Additional old postcards will be added as they are found.

Fourth Street Elevator

Constructed in 1882, the Fourth Street Elevator is the shortest (296 feet) and the steepest (74 degrees) railroad in the United States. Facing the Mississippi River, the elevator travels from a shopping area up the bluff to a residential neighborhood. The uniqueness of the Fourth Street Elevator has made it a major tourist attraction in the Dubuque area.

Hill Staircase

Located on the north side of downtown Dubuque is this limestone staircase climbing the bluff.
