Research Policy
We offer one hour of free research to new members from materials held by the Society. There is a charge of $10 per hour for minimal research to others. More extensive research will be done by volunteers from our society, with charges at the discretion of the volunteer. Upon request, we will send names and addresses of those who will research for a fee. Don't forget to send a SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope).

Reference Library
The Society maintains an extensive reference room in the lower level of the Jefferson Public Library. It is staffed by a volunteer on Wednesday 1 - 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 - 12 noon. Other times possible during regular library hours - phone the library ahead of time so they can arrange for a volunteer - 515.386.2835.

The reference room contains all the Greene County publications, obituary scrapbooks, numerous family histories, 1935 Assessor's List indexed card file and much more. It also holds several "how to" books, plus information from several other counties in Iowa and information from other states. The room is equipped with a copy machine, film and fiche reader and computer (on-line).

Pioneer Certificates
Did you have an ancestor who lived in Greene County by 1870 or before? If so, contact Shirley Ross, Corresponding Secretary and Pioneer Certificate chairperson for an application packet. Our Pioneer Certificate program was started in 1996 to help commemorate Iowa's Sesquicentennial. The certificates are on high quality, 8 1/2 x 11 parchment colored paper with brown lettering and background sketch done by one or our members, Jeanne Marchant Maxwell.  They make excellent gifts and are suitable for framing. What a wonderful way to honor the memory of your ancestor!
