Sights to See Around Jackson County

When you drag your family to Jackson County, Iowa, to do research, here are some things they can do in Jackson County while you are here.

The Maquoketa Caves State Park

Maquoketa Caves

The Maquoketa Caves are 6 miles northwest of Maquoketa. These natural limestone caves offer an opportunity to explore caves, even for the novice. Trails and wooden stairways make it easy to get around the caves. Camping sites are available here at the Maquoketa Caves State Park, as well as a nice playground. (Photo by Mary L. Sutton)

The Hurstville Lime Kilns

Lime Kilns

The Hurstville Lime Kilns are just north of Maquoketa. These lime kilns provided building material that was sent around the country until the invention of Portland Cement. A covered picnic site is located here, but no facilities. The Hurstville Interpretive Center, which includes a nature walk and educational facilities will be built nearby and is scheduled for completion in about 2004. (Photo by Mary L. Sutton)
