Newell
Newell, H.R. (p. 349)
- Hugh R. Newell was born in Louisa County on the 12 June 1883, the son
of Thomas and Mary (Dowson) Newell. In December 1907, Mr. Newell married
Sarah M. Shellabarger, daughter of Thomas B. and Sara M. (Westlake) Shellabarger.
Mr. Shellabarger died in March 1897. There were seven children as follows:
Roy; Sevilla d. age 6 months; Mrs. Newell; Perry; Thomas E.; W. Ralph and
Russell B.
Mr. and Mrs. Newell had three children but the first two, twins, died, unnamed. Thomas Herbert was born 26 September 1909.
- Robert F. Newell was born in Wayne Co., Ohio, on the 20 February 1818,
the son of Thomas and Harriet D. (Flaherty) Newell, who were born, reared,
and married in Ohio. There were six children in the family: James, d. in
Iowa age of seventy; Mary m. William Paulins; Samuel d. in Black Hawk Co;
Margaret m. Alexander Finley; Thomas and Robert, of this review.
On the 31 December 1843, on the banks of the Des Moines River at Eddyville, Iowa, Mr. Newell married Christina Newell, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (McNay) Newel, who were both born in Kentucky and celebrated their marriage in Ohio on 9 September 1809, having gone to Ohio in 1808. Unto them were born ten children: Malinda m. Walter Clement; Jane m. Benjamin Ginn; Robert; Mrs. Newell; Lucinda m. Benjamin Fuston;James; Mary m. Levi Hayes; John; Amanda m. Jacob Kiser; and Hugh.
Robert and Christina Newell had nine children: Elizabeth m. Dr. Henry Cushman; Thomas; Caroline m. Louis A. Riley; Hugh d. as an infant; Mary m. E.S. Curtis; John; William; Robertr M.; and Harriet m. B.F. Sidman.
- Robert W. Newell was born 15 February 1861, the son of Thomas and Sarah
J. (Mock) Newell, the father a native of Ohio and the mother of Pennsylvania.
Ten children were born unto Mr. and Mrs. Newell: Elizabeth m. George Hensley;
Josephine, m. Thomas Wiser; Hugh T.; Samuel P.; Robert W., of this sketch;
Benjamin; Ida M.; William; Vira; and Abe. The father died 27 September
1899, at the age of seventy-six and the mother died the 24 April 1905,
at the age of seventy-two.
On the 29 February 1888, Mr. Newell married Minnie Hannan, a daughter of William and Louisa Hannan, who were the parents of the following children: Walter C.; Jefferson; Annie m. Elmer Smith, of Burlington; John; Minnie, above, who died 16 April 1892; Mary m. WIlliam Hill; Edward; Louden; Dora; and Edith m. Alfred Pillling.
Mr. and Mrs Newell had three children, but only two survived, Mina I.,the yongest died in infancy; Grace; and H. Stanley
- Thomas Newell was born in Lousia County on the 7 April 1847, the son
of Robert F. and Christina Newell. His grandfather, Thomas Newell, was
a soldier of the war of 1812, and his maternal great grandfather, James
Flaharity, served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary
War. His father died 12 May 1898.
On the 5 April 1877, he married Mary Dowson, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Robson) Dowson, who were born, reared and married in England,from which country they emigrated to the United States in 1849. Her father was from Cumberland Co. and her mother from the city of Sunderland. When they arrived in this country, they located in Cincinnati. They came to Columbus Jct. when they retired in 1893 where Mrs. Dowson died 16 January 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Dowson had eleven children: Jane m. C. Bonnichsen; Mary m. Thomas Newell; Robson; John; William; Charles Henry; three died in infancy; Thomas; and Florence E.
Mr. and Mrs. Newell had seven children: Mary C, m. Rudolph Schlichting; Robert J.; Hugh R.; Jesse D.; Thomas R.; Edwin O.; Frances B.
- William S. Newell was born 5 July 1857, the son of Thomas and Sarah
J.(Mock) Newell, a brother to Robert W. Newell, above.
On the 16 November 1898,he married Carrie Kennedy,daguhter of Joseph C. and Martha (Kennedy) Kennedy. There were seven children in the Kennedy family: William; Minnie, m. Herbert McCormick; Annie m. John Berg, of Olds, IA; Carrie, above; Maggie; Sadie; and Clarence. Mrs. Newelll;s mother died in 1890 and her father in1901.
Mr. and Mrs. Newell had two children: Blanche Eliza b. 9 December 1899; and Dorothy Mabel b. 5 October 1902.
Nyemaster, Rex (p. 78)
- Rex Nyemaster, a native of Wapello, Iowa, was born 17 October 1886,
the son of J.L. and Fannie (Mahlinger) Nyemaster. There were five children
in their family: Ray; Lea; Rex,of this review; Oak; and Ona.
Mr. Nyemaster was married to Esther Wilton, a daughter of Theodore and Lena (Richley) Wilton. they had one daughter, Helen, b. 5 June 1908.
