Battle of Buffington Island
Buffington GenForum
Descendants of Richard Buffington by Ed Gentzler
1. Joel BUFFINGTON, son of William BUFFINGTON and of Magdalena Lena
FERREE, born 1735/6 Virginia. He was married Elizabeth LOGAN. Joel was
married by 1772 and was active in real estate in Western Virginia, Kentucky
and probably in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He bought a property called Buffington
Island in 1787 that many of the family have legends concerning. His sons
Joseph and William are sometimes listed as first buying this island. The
Isle of DuVol is listed some places as the same as Buffington Island, and
in other sources is shown as a separate island. Joel is the progenitor
of all of the Louisa County Buffington family, with several of his children
resident in Louisa County in the 1840's and 50's, but most not staying
long. Joel's wife, Elizabeth Logan was part Indian, it is alleged, but
no documentation for this claim exists that I have seen.
