CAIRO HISTORY
Cairo was laid out by James H. Marshall on the northwest quarter
of the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 28, twp. 74
N R 4 W and was surveyed by W. S. Kremer, June 15, 1865. Marshall's addition
to Cairo, which was laid out by John S. Marshall on Oct. 4, 1866, and surveyed
by William C. Blackstone, is said to be laid out on the north side of Cairo
proper.

Louisa County Pair's Grandchildren are 7th Generation Iowans.
Columbus Junction--Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Buffington, rural route 2, Columbus
Junction, have 16 grandchildren of the 7th generation who have lived continuously
in the state of Iowa. They are Merlin Davis, home from service, Lois Davis,
Joy Davis, Roger Davis, Robert Buffington, Larry Buffington, Dianne Buffington,
Leota Buffington, Carl Marvin Buffington, Loren Buffington, Delbert Buffington,
Gary Buffington, Maribeth Buffington, Phyllis Carlyn and Philip Carl Buffing-ton,
twins, all of Louisa County and Edward Buffington of Perry, Ia.
They are descendants of John Marshall, born in 1740 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and who after the Revolutionary War moved to Frederick County, Virginia. His son, William Marshall, born in Virginia in 1770, moved to Green County, Ohio, and on April 8, 1849, came to Louisa County. His wife was Elizabeth Cole, whose father William Cole, served in the Revolutionary war.
John Marshall's eldest son, John, Jr. purchased a homestead in Iowa in 1838. The family moved in 1839. In one corner of the farm their son, James, platted the village of Cairo, Ia. In 1845 another son, Benjamin, and family, came to Iowa followed in 1849 by the youngest son, Seth, and the aged parents and family. These families all made their homes in the vicinity of Cairo.
The Buffington children are Clinton, of Perry; Layton, of Columbus Junction; Rex of Wapello; Kenneth, of Columbus Junction; Gerald of Co-lumbus Junction, and Mrs. Ury Davis, of Crawfordsville.
