The Mahaska County Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Cemeteries was established by the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors in December of 1997.

Our Mission
To locate, protect, restore and preserve Mahaska County's historic pioneer cemeteries.

What is a Pioneer Cemetery?

A Pioneer Cemetery is defined by Iowa Code as a cemetery having six or fewer burials in the preceding fifty years. Forty pioneer cemeteries have been designated in Mahaska County.

This site was developed to assist researchers seeking the graves of their Mahaska County ancestors, and to increase awareness of the need for preserving these rapidly disappearing historical resources.
