We then added to their list the records for Island Cemetery taken by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the late 1930's.  These are very valuable because some of the older stones noted then may not be found today.

After the WPA listings were added, a more recent update was received in a most unusual manner!

While visiting this  website, Angela Strause Weikert,  who rewalked the Island Cemetery in June, 2000 with her mother,  Kaye  Strause, also stopped to read the webmaster's personal genealogy information and discovered that her mother in law and my mom are cousins!  Angie then emailed us giving permission for the data from their walk to be used on our site and added updated information to the Brei and Krell family descendants!

Information in the 2000 walk was taken from all available stones, but we area advised there were also several unmarked graves as well.  Thanks so much to Angie and her mom for their contribution!

This summary from the MPL file:
Located on North Street in Fruitland; leaving Muscatine on Stewart Road to the Fruitland or Y turnoff. Turn to the right and follow until come to the sign and turn right again. There is one entrance completely covered with evergreen trees evenly spaced in rows with sandy soil; kept in fairly good condition." (date of this narrative unknown.)

From Angie Strause Weikert, we are told that the Island Cemetery is located  about  5 miles southwest of Muscatine and a mile east of Fruitland.

Note in WPA they combined tombstone inscriptions with obit extractions--in some cases people appear twice with two last names (example is CARVIN and CORWIN)--I am including both listings as data varies.

In order not to lose any available information, we have combined the information from the MPL, WPA and the Strause-Weikert rewalk.  The information from the re-walk is in blue.

In some cases Kay Strause has filled in data from her personal knowledge and genealogy.
