Jesse Cemetery
aka Haroff Cemetery
Seventy Six Twp Sec 4
near Cranston IA

The cemetery is located on top of a small hill on Independence Avenue.  It is well mowed and fenced in, but has no sign marking the location and is easily missed if one is not looking carefully, since there are no large markers visible from the road.  The few remaining markers are mostly down, sunk into the ground or broken.

Our initial listing of this cemetery was compiled from 1930's WPA records (noted in red) and a brief listing compiled in the 1980's by the staff of the Musser Library in Muscatine, Iowa.  The WPA list did note that Peter and Elizabeth Haroff were the first burials at this location.  Thanks to Bill Dickerson, great-grandson of David Haroff, for supplying additional information on the Haroff family, which was then added to the listing.

An interesting note from the WPA records is that it shows David Haroff buried at "St John's" cemetery in Lake Twp
noting that St John's may be High Prairie Cemetery.  It also provided two burials, Eliza and John Riggs, which were not on the Musser Library listing.

On 10 Jul 2002, the cemetery was rewalked by Susie Martin-Rott, Mary Hamilton Singleton and Toni Hesseltine.
The stone of David Haroff, with a death date matching the listing on the WPA records was located at Jesse cemetery at this time, so clearly he is not at High Prairie.  No stones were located for the Riggs listings.  Additionally, some stones previously recorded are no longer there, or are sunk below ground.

Note 1: From the 1910 Census it was learned that Matilda Jesse was still living at that time in Lake Township.  She was listed as the head of  household , age 58 born in Germany, as were her parents.  Also in the household were daughter Emma B, age 27 b. Germany, son Albert age 26 (may be the Albert listed above who died in 1911) b. Germany, son Leonard W., age 23 b. Germany, and son Edward, age 20 also born in Germany.  The complete census listing for this family in 1910 can be found on p.245 of the census films, household #52.

Note 2: Muscatine Co IA marriage records indicate an Arthur Robert ROWLAND married Sarah Haroff on 27 Jul 1884. While this does not provide any additional information on Otto Rowland, it does show a tie between the Rowland and Haroff families. There is no listing on the 1910 Muscatine Co IA Census for Arthur ROWLAND.
