Oelwein Area Genealogical Society Meeting

Tuesday, May 16. 2006

Joan Ford presented the program on the Farleigh Hungerford Castle in Somerset, England at the Oelwein Area Genealogical Society meeting, Tuesday afternoon. Thomas Hungerford, Joan Ford's eighteen great-grandfather, fortified the manor house between 1370 and 1382. The castle is now in ruins.

Roy Ortner chaired the meeting. Members told of current research at roll call.

Chris Rynhart, Sacramento, California attended the meeting. She is doing research on her Hayes and Warning family from the Hazleton and Oelwein areas. Some of her other surnames are King, Knapp, Rummell, Harrington, Minton and Wilkinson.

Betty Ralph of Kentucky e-mailed looking for an obituary on William Davis Arthur, born 1857 in Greene County, Indiana and died March 11, 1944 in Randalia. She is also looking for the death date of his son, Lester Arthur, who died in 1960.

The current newsletter from the Iowa Genealogical Society was received. It lists a web site, iowalandrecords.org/portal/, which has information from about 1928 to the present on Iowa land records. Not all counties are yet represented. You have to register for the site but it is free.

Refreshements were served by Mardelle Clendenen and Judy Martinez.

The next meeting will be June 20 in the community room at Otter Creek Cottages.
