Herman C. Kuhl (John's father) was born in Cartzig, Providence of Brandenburg, Germany. He came to the U.S. in 1867 with his parents. They settled in Columbus, Wis. and later moved to Crete, Nebr. They moved in 1881 to a farm near Maurice, Sioux County, Iowa.
Nellie Mieras, of Dutch descent, was born in Paris, Wis. The family moved to Sioux County, Iowa, in 1880. She and Herman were married in 1887. They lived in Sioux Center until 1913 when he was offered a job in Odebolt, Iowa, taking charge of a gas plant there. When the plant closed he was in charge of the Standard Oil station in the same location for 11 years. He retired in 1930.

This was the Herman C. Kuhl family home during World War I. At the time it had an enclosed porch which was opened up in later years. The home is pictured here in August, 2004.
