The DRACE Brothers, Genealogy & Family History

This DRACE Family story starts with two brothers, the oldest JOHN FREDERICK DRACE, b. 1801 and younger brother HENRY DRACE, b. 1809. both were born near Oldenburg, Germany. It is not known who their parents were, nor any other brothers or sisters.

It is assumed that they were raised in their native land of Germany, and base on their children's birth their marriage date was determined. It is believed that JOHN F. DRACE and his bride ELIZABETH C. (RENTKER) DRACE came to America first after 1836 (their 1st. born was in Germany as per 1850 Census of Brownstone Twp., Ind.), arriving at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland then relocating to Hagerstown, Maryland, then relocated in the fall of 1838 to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Brother HENRY DRACE and his wife MARY ELIZABETH (SYNDER) DRACE were married about 1837, in Germany and joined his brother in Cincinnati, Ohio prior to 1839 (their oldest was born in Cincinnati, Oh. 1839).

Both families left Cincinnati, Ohio together in 1840 going west to Brownstone Twp., in Jackson County, Indiana. Here they preceded to clear, cut, save and burn the trees and vegetation to plow their fields. They farmed this area for over 15 years until the WESTWARD movement caught them again, which they pulled up stakes and relocated to the rich and fertile land of Page County, Iowa.

These brothers were very close to each other, through out their lifetime. The names of their children are so similar that its been difficult to determine who is who in the records.
